He followed the right horse as the 1/5 left, all he has to do was sit 2nd or 3rd for a major piece but he decided to over drive and used up his horse unnecessarily

 Just because the five left was no guarantee for him. Obviously there are other drivers that want also to follow the favorite.
 Only time I seeing this as a good idea is if 'YOU' are the favorite, much the best and just want to avoid the rail and trouble early.
