Burke/Williams/USTA
« on: November 04, 2026, 05:37:39 PM »
With all that Ron Burke has on his plate, why does he want to run and unseat Russell Williams for USTA director?
I am guessing there is more to it then meets the eye.
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

Despite managing the largest and most successful racing stable in Standardbred history, Hall of Fame trainer Ron Burke (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fg%2F11jd84_x6v&q=Ron+Burke) decided to challenge incumbent USTA President Russell Williams for the District 7 membership director seat in the 2026 USTA Board of Directors elections. [1] (https://ustrottingnews.com/us-trotting-elections-district-7-one-seat/), [2] (https://paulickreport.com/features/keeping-pace/keeping-pace-the-united-states-trotting-and-defense-attorneys-association)
According to his official candidate statements and interviews, Burke's motivations and platform center around the following key reasons:
• A Desire to Give Back: Burke succinctly noted that he simply "just felt it was my time to help". He expressed that strengthening harness racing is a "personal responsibility to today's horsemen and to those who follow". [1] (https://paulickreport.com/features/keeping-pace/keeping-pace-the-united-states-trotting-and-defense-attorneys-association), [2] (https://ustrottingnews.com/us-trotting-elections-district-7-one-seat/)
• Growing and Sustaining the Sport: He stated that he wants to see the sport grow and thrive, believing that his lifelong involvement gives him an unmatched passion to make a positive contribution. [1] (https://ustrottingnews.com/us-trotting-elections-district-7-one-seat/)
• Bringing a Businessman's Perspective: As a leader of a massive racing and breeding enterprise, Burke highlights his experience managing employees, operating a large stable, navigating immense costs, and dealing with regulations across multiple racing jurisdictions. He believes this hands-on background gives him a better understanding of how USTA policies directly impact the livelihoods of working horsemen. [1] (https://ustrottingnews.com/us-trotting-elections-district-7-one-seat/)
• Specific Policy Priorities: His stated campaign priorities focus on actively supporting horsemen, pursuing fair and standardized medication rules, promoting responsible horse aftercare, and protecting the economic and breeding foundations of harness racing. [1] (https://ustrottingnews.com/us-trotting-elections-district-7-one-seat/)
Critics and industry observers, such as columnists at the Paulick Report, note that Burke's run creates a distinct "breeder vs. trainer" dynamic and represents a fresh face challenging the established USTA status quo. • The voting timeline and deadlines for the District 7 election.
• The perspective and counter-arguments from Russell Williams' campaign.
• Industry commentary regarding the strategic implications of this race on the USTA presidency.
Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Thanks for the update.
I think there is more to it then what is made public.
If it was an open seat, then go for it.
Why go after the larges breeder in your home state?
I smell a skunk in the wood pile.

He's the sport's most successful owner trainer in history.

Why not?

Do you think the USTA is good for the sport? I do not. Maybe having someone from racing would be a good thing.

That is one way to look at it. If Burke was to be President of the USTA, do you think he should step down as managing partner of Burke breeders, owners trainer and general manager.
Or, do not forsee a conflict?

Is there a conflict with the current arrangement?

This just proves to me that he doesn't need to be at the barn full time. All you need is trustworthy employees to jog and train

Burke should have changed his residence to give himself a better chance of winning. It’s tough to beat the establishment when you’re on the outside looking in.
Horseplop isn’t a popularity contest!!

How much do you think the president of the USTA works? I guess Russell Williams does do much in his real job as President and CEO of Hanover Shoe Farms and Management of the Standardbred Horse Sales Company.

I don't think Burke's fellow horsemen that he beats race after race, day after day, and year after year are going to give him an election win.
What say you?

He’ll just put everything in his brother’s name like he does every damn time he gets a positive

How He Compares to Other Top Trainers

On a pure percentage/per-start basis, Burke's medication violation rate is often lower or completely on par with other elite trainers in the sport.
The primary difference between Burke and other trainers is the nature of the positives rather than the frequency:
1. Therapeutic and Contamination vs. Performance-Enhancing: The vast majority of Burke’s career positives involve minute "picogram" or trace levels of therapeutic medications or environmental contaminants (such as Gabapentin, Lamotrigine, Glaucine, or over-the-threshold Furosemide/Lasix) rather than Class 1 performance-enhancing drugs.

Doesn’t matter what the positives are he still puts his brother down as trainer each time he serves suspension
