Pete Hegseth admired two antique globes kept by the Pentagon that were believed to be used by General (later President) Dwight Eisenhower. He wanted one moved to his office, the Washington Post reports. Ordinarily, the Pentagon employs trained specialists to transport its valuable historical possessions, but those experts were unavailable because they had been furloughed during a partial federal shutdown sparked by a Congressional dispute over Trump’s immigration agenda. This didn’t stop an impatient Hegseth from getting some staffers to move it for him with disastrous results. The untrained movers knocked the globe off its spinning mechanism, causing it to fall onto its base and puncture a significant hole several inches wide in Antarctica.
