BREAKING: George W. Bush's daughter Barbara donates to the DEMOCRAT running against Ken Paxton in Texas – taking after her namesake grandmother, the famously anti-Trump former First Lady!
Barbara Pierce Bush, named for the legendary Republican first lady known as the Silver Fox, donated $2,500 to a political action committee supporting Democrat James Talarico in his U.S. Senate race against Republican Ken Paxton.
The contribution appears in a newly filed federal campaign finance report. The money is small potatoes in a Senate race costing hundreds of millions, but the Bush name is another matter.
And Grandma Barbara would have understood perfectly.
The elder Barbara Bush had zero patience for Donald Trump. "I'm sick of him," she declared in 2016, disgusted by his insults toward women and his disparagement of military service.
She later said she probably no longer considered herself a Republican. She even kept a clock counting down the remaining time in Trump's presidency beside her until she died in 2018.
One suspects she might have had a few choice words for scandal-plagued, philandering Ken Paxton, too.
Her granddaughter has already demonstrated her political independence, campaigning for Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania in 2024.
Meanwhile, George W. Bush has largely avoided confronting Trump publicly, even as the Republican Party has moved far from the “compassionate conservatism” he once championed.
The Bushes helped define a Republican Party that talked about being kinder, gentler, and welcoming to immigrants. Today's MAGA-dominated party is a very different, more malevolent creature.
The elder Barbara lived long enough to see a Republican Party transformed to something she barely recognized. Her namesake is now putting her money behind a Democrat. Maybe the two Barbaras have more in common than just their name
