If Yannick cared about making the final he stays in- especially off that half with that horse - and sees what he can pick up in the lane.  That wasn’t the goal.

He drives against Burke horses all the time.

in the breeders crown or any major stake race one entry per trainer to avoid this nonsense
no trainer changes within 30 days of the race

Trainers have horses from multiple owners. Who decides who can enter and who cannot. Do you refund the sustaining payments if you block horses from entering?

you guys are right under current circumstances
and yes i recall melander having 6 in a stake race at lexington a few weeks ago
but perhaps a rule or similar one would allow other trainers to get horses
its not great for the overall industry when a few large trainers control a lot of the entries
its also not a great look for the wagering public
not sure what the answer is

I agree its not good for racing when a few big time trainers have half the field
The little guy trainers have little to no chance anymore
The problem is as stated above, same trainer with a few in the same race, but with multiple ownership groups

What the fuck is going on. The 12 race lag is insane.
The Starting Gate broke down and they had to remove it from the track and switch cars!

The 3yo colt & gelding trot will be an interesting example of genuine trainer conflict as Melander has Apex and Nix Nacken, arguably two of the top 3 or 4 in the field.  Apex has possibly the best breeding in the sport right now (Walner/Mission Brief) and has won the Hambo in record time (1:49.2).  If he wins the Breeders' Crown, he will be worth in the $15-$25mm range as a stud.  If he loses that could be cut by a substantial amount.  Nix Nacken is a gelding.  Winning the Breeders' Crown will earn him some purse money (less than $400k) and a nice trophy and he will go on (if he stays healthy) to race as an aged trotter for the next few years and his value as a racehorse will not diminish much if he loses.  Does Nix Nacken get trained a bit more lightly?  Does he not get his shoes pulled? etc. etc.  The point you raise is that almost any multiple entries CAN create a conflict of interest from the same trainer, and in this case it seemingly does?

IMHO
It is better to have a trainer have four in a race and be up front and on papper about it, then the same horses listed under different trainers, but still controlled by the same head trainer.

Back in the day Langley tried to limit multiple entries from one stable. So Farrington then had multiple entries, but listed under different owner/trainer.
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

if harness racing is dead what are you doing on this website?

Do the math genius. $700k vs. breeders cup will do $120 MILLION.  Over 100x more. And not as if that sport is thriving either.

The fix is to remove the handouts. that is what is fueling everything.

I realize your common theme is by removing the handouts. How is that going to fix anything? Without the handouts, some tracks would be forced to close while others would see purses so low, it would put people with cheaper horses out of business and alot of jobs would be lost.

There is NO way to fix harness racing. Most of its fans are older people and as they've died off no one has replace them. Younger people aren't interested unless they grew up in the industry.
