The mystery surrounding Donald Trump’s ever-present aide Natalie Harp just got considerably more interesting.
The NYT has obtained a deeply personal letter Harp wrote to Trump, offering a remarkable glimpse into the devotion of the 35-year-old aide whose name has suddenly become one of the hottest topics in Washington.
“I want things to always be right between us,” Harp wrote.
She went on to apologize for being distracted and described “forgetting to eat throughout the days, and even forgetting to sleep, and only catching a couple hours at a time.”
She signed it: “With all my heart, Natalie.”
But the Times’ new reporting makes clear that Harp is far more than the “human printer” who trails Trump with a portable printer and hands him whatever information she thinks he should see.
She works out of the Oval Office, has a regular seat on Marine One, texts with world leaders on Trump’s behalf and stays up late with him drafting social media posts. She never takes a day off, including Sundays, and operates largely outside the normal White House chain of command.
Trump apparently values that devotion enormously. In their blockbuster book “Regime Change,” the Times’ dynamic duo Haberman and Swan report that Trump has told people that Harp is the only person who loves him as much as his wife and children.
Other staffers will eventually leave and make money, Trump has said, but Natalie never will, according to the book.
Even in a White House built around personal loyalty to Trump, the Times reports that Harp’s displays of devotion have unnerved some of her colleagues.
And her influence has consequences. The Times reports that Harp feeds Trump material she finds in the darkest corners of social media, including the racist video Trump posted depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.
All of this might have remained largely inside the strange ecosystem of Trumpworld if Sen. Jon Ossoff hadn’t told Trump last week to go “travel with Natalie.”
Trump’s allies exploded. They accused Ossoff of sexism and rushed to Harp’s defense, drawing vastly more attention to a woman most Americans had never heard of. Which prompted reporters to do what they do -- start digging.
Now we’ve learned about Harp climbing into the cargo area of an SUV when there wasn’t a seat for her in Trump’s motorcade. Her own estranged brother called that an “unhealthy obsession.”
And now the Times has revealed just how extraordinary her access to the president really is, along with a letter telling Trump:
“I want things to always be right between us.”
“With all my heart, Natalie.”
