The perpetual target of the president’s ire due to her insistence on doing her job, asking him tough questions, and refusing to back down when he gets pissy had a gratifying moment last night when she got to break the news of the president’s humiliation.
“Joining me tonight is one of the reporters who broke this story. Washington Post national security reporter Dan Lamothe. And Dan, I mean, this is a remarkable scoop and very thorough reporting here. Can you just kind of walk us through what you've learned here?” asks Collins.
“Yeah, I think that the most significant piece here is that for weeks now, the American public talking about the two Air Force One jets, the newer one from Qatar and the older one from the last couple of decades of operations. And in reality, the president was on neither plane. This came to the post in part because individuals thought that there was a whole and public understanding here that needed to be clarified,” said Lamothe.
Part of that public understanding was that Trump put the entire White House press corps and much of his staff in danger by using them as a decoy while he himself slithered away in a catering truck.
"When you have even the usage of an Air Force One call sign on a plane that the president is not aboard in that moment, that's remarkable!” said Lamothe.
After enduring so many public insults and disparaging remarks from Trump, being able to break this story on live TV had to be very satisfying for Collins.
