Record Purses
« on: June 05, 2026, 04:56:26 PM »
Northfield, OH – Forty years of history. A quarter of a million dollars. A field overflowing with champions.

On Saturday night (June 6), Northfield Park Racino will host the 40th edition of the Battle of Lake Erie (Grade 2), and for the first time in the race’s storied history, the purse will stand at a record $250,000. The milestone renewal has attracted one of the deepest and most accomplished fields ever assembled for Northeast Ohio’s signature pacing event.

Not quite true. Generally speaking, the horsemen only get that through slots/VLT’s. The house gets the $$ from table games, etc.

harness racing is flourishing! There's so much money to be made if you put your horse in the right classes.

So much money from government handouts. That is not the definition of "flourishing".

In Indiana, racing receives money from slots and table games.  Not from sports wagering, which is unfortunately growing like wildfire.

What happens when the handouts are shut off? There is no business case for harness racing to exist. I does not have a customer base which can support it. Harness racing is like the startups that get loads of funding for a product that has no actual marker value. They eventually go out of business.

No view of the future? No view that the industry is unable to support itself? That logic is why harness racing only exists at the whim of politicians. That logic will cause the end of the sport.

Why should it get any of the money? It is a government handout...period.

It is posts like this which make me even more motivated to continue to push elected representatives to eliminate the handouts to racing. I would prefer to money go to fix roads, bridges, or schools that to people like you.
