I’m too old to shovel
But I’m coming to jersey in two months for some racing
I got a jersey bred who looks promising
Don’t know what that means.
Trainer blowing smoke up my ass probably
i still go to the Meadowlands from time to time, the new grandstand is OK, but I am old enough to remember the Pegasus, literally the best, most luxurious restaurant in all of horse racing, withn its own dedicated betting windows and a huge glass-fronted "balcony" where you couild go to watch the races if you didn't want to spend the night watching the races on a small TV.
Way back in the day it was a perfect date night race track, lots of couples and younger folks. Anyone remember the stand where they sold shrimp cocktail and corn on the cob on the first floor of the grandstand? Good times, runners half the season and the standardbreds the rest. The harness racing was absolutely the best in the US.
Now I am not sure how it is now but I would never take a woman to Yonkers back in the day. the sleasiest clientele ever, all the mutuel clerks were old, balding, with jet black dyed hair and looked like they would slit your throat for fun lol if they had a chance. Msasters of the sleight of hand so you had to watch them count out your winnings CAREFULLY.
Monti is not far away and I remember the good old days of packed crowds on Saturday night and Sunday afternoons when I was a kid. By the time I was old enough to drive the die had been cast, still was OK for an occasional date night but had zero vibe and me and my girl woud be like the youngest people in sight. Still, I saw Parker, Case, Mosher, Brennan, Randall and a million others before they all got into reall trouble lol.
The saddest fact is the racing at the Meadowlands really is crap now. Back in the day the horses were the best of the best and you had shippers from everywhere to scope out. Nowadays race after race of terrible horses. Used to be you'd look for the best horse...now it is the "least worse" horse.
But to be fair, bet a couple of cards at Aqueduct recently and the dropoff in quality there is off the charts unbelievable. Small fields, mostly "beaten" claimers and the cheapest maiden claimers you could ever find. They are running the races for the horsemen so they don't have to take their dogs someplace else to race. Bottom maiden claimers used to be 35K, which would be over 100k today, but they are racing them for 12.5 and 20K, which would have been 3-5K back in the day....the worst horses on planet earth that you'd have to race at Commodore Downs lol. Bottom open claimers today are 10k, which would have been 2.5k forty years ago...once again Commodore Downs territory.
Slots were the beginning of the end for quality racing. On the runners side, the NY purses were so much higher that all the good horses shipped in, now the other circuits are still less dollars but not enough to make it worth while to ship.
Anyway, I'll stop this trip down memory lane because it is 7am and I am already completely depressed lol.
