Oh I know, he wants another story!!! Back in 86? I was qualifying one at Monticello. Getting ready to leave I get called into the paddock office. Thinking what did I do, is this horse out of lines? Some of you may not understand that btw....eligibilit y certificates. Anyway, I get on the phone it's Vince Bergamo. In typical "Mr. B" tone...Miiiiiiich ael. Need a favor, Barry White "former Montgomery PD Chief and then Goshen Historic manager" quit. There's nobody there to handle the place. This is when they were really hurting, had no help and the one guy was there. Long story short I took over maintaining the track and doing the basic around the place. Pushing the manure back, etc. While also taking care of my barn. Pat Jessop was the woman running things in the office. And yes I was paid. But along the way I learned the ropes of track maintenance "oh you didn't know I did that did you" from Bob Ashelman first and then old man Chuck Coon later. I would run down to M1 and Bob would load up my truck with screens for free. They also donated the first Larcom and Mitchell conditioner to GHT the first in NYS if not mistaken. I swear my them and can rebuild one blindfolded. It was the same time a man name John Bruen of the Independent Republican did a story on me with Barry before he quit during the Trottingbred weekend that Labor Day. He saw me running around first with the water truck, then dragging the track screen only they wanted it rock hard AND starting the races too with my dumbass brother working the wings. One of these days I'll get that story here at the library. But it was cool I was still just a kid a loved the place. Still do actually, it's still the cradle. But I was able to use what I was taught down the road when it came to track maintenance and running farms or training centers. I always feel for those guys who bust their asses keeping tracks right. They never get a "good job" from horsemen when a track is good, and always get the screaming when the weather leaves them no options. Typical entitled crybabies. Calhoun?
