My counter to anybody verbally downgrading the Navy was saying, how you going to get those troops and equipment there? Swim?
Not to mention most beach landings were preceded by 24 - 48 hours of heavy naval gunfire to soften up the target before any troops landed.
Plenty of sailors died due to enemy submarines and kamikazes, thousands and hundreds of ships not to mention that most of the jets called in for backup in Vietnam came from carriers offshore.

Yes, you are right. Mostly the Navy landings and barrages came in the Pacific in ww2 and Normandy of course.
Nowadays they don't even use landing craft anymore, they have giant hovercraft that are huge and deliver many troops and even tanks, but that is mostly island warfare and not the jungle you speak of.
