Driver change at Cumby
« on: April 20, 2025, 09:13:09 AM »
Minutes before the scheduled start of Race 8 on Saturday Benson Merrill driving #7 Commondiscourtesy (a horse he also trained) was summoned off the track to the paddock.  Moments later, the horse returned with Walter Case in the bike.  Note: Merrill was also the trainer of record for #3 Art Scene.  Anyone know why the driver change And why so close to post time?

Assuming the owner of #3 is his wife? Most places have a rule you cannot drive against your spouse's horse the same as you can't drive against one you own yourself regardless if you are the trainer of both.

Not the case here.  And if there were a rule violation, why would it take the judges til T minus 3 to figure it out?

Art Scene is owned by Lauren Merrill, he can't drive against a horse he owns! Even in Gumbyland!

When did that become a rule?  Takter often drove with 2-3 others in the race he owned

  • Trigger: Very good analysis Calhoun, moreso from my perspective that Albin Jimenez was suspended and the #2 ride was really suspicious and overooked.  Is it possible that there is action equal to far greater outside mutual pools worldwide?

  • Calhoun: That tri pool was $4500. Net of takeout $3300.  Out of 60 possible outcomes, the result was  5th most likely out of 60 (using win odds to calc). Paid 14 to 1. Doesn't seem awful. It also would have been bet pretty good by the genpop. Maybe rigged for the 3 to win but the tri? I think not too likely.
