How can anyone make a living with these purses? If you look at what the horses make to date, they are barely covering the expenses. And if they say they "make it through the windows," that's BS. When they upgrade their stock, they may spend $6,000 on the horse and its the same trainers that have been there for years. You don't see any new young blood. It is a shame for the place years ago was a great place to race.

I respectfully disagree, if you know anyone racing at Monticello they are making money through the window.

The old making money through the windows. And that changes your business from a "loss" to break-even or a profit. So, it's either making an ROR on legit betting, or you are what? Fixing races? Betting on inside information? Having some kind of edge or advantage? Very little to no chance at Monticello.

After almost 40 years in this sport and business, as an owner, breeder, and yes, as a bettor, IMO, no trainer or owner is incorporating their "through the windows" dollars with their owning/training horses dollars and having that kind of swing in their profitability/losses because of it. I don't know one trainer in the sport who is a sharper handicapper and bettor than the pro's that I know.

There are some plopsters that don't understand the process-the driver decides on the outcome if he/she is betting to make money, not the trainers!

FYI, as an owner, I never asked my trainer if it was time to 'go to the windows' and bet based on their say so.  I asked how the horse was feeling, etc. and bet accordingly.  It isn't worth it to put the trainer on "the hotseat" based on their word/opinion and then have the horse go a bad race and cause more friction than it's worth.  From time to time, my trainer would say something to me beforehand (and he only told me twice) and he was spot-on. The 1st time, the horse won and paid $ 3.60 and the 2nd time for $ 11.60.
