Imports
« on: December 18, 2024, 08:50:42 AM »

There has been a large increase of horses recently from NZ and Aus. that win off the Q. or within
three starts. Some go on to win four or five in a row. Many of the trainers such as Stratton, Bucci,
Cushing and Blackler to name a few, are not world beaters. Just good trainers.

A lot of them are upper conditioned horses with the occasional G1 horse thrown in. They have to
race in N/W of $7500 as sort of a maiden when making their first start.

What kind of money $$$$ are they paying for these and how much are the import fees?

Most of these horses land in the $60,000 to $80,000 range. The top tier is up to $125,000 and more. This would include all fees etc. A big factor in the price is the shipping. The shipping cost is around $25,000 which is included in the price of the horse delivered to your barn.

So if you buy one that lands you $80,000. You are technically paying $55,000 for the horse and then the $25,000 for shipping

Then you have the conversion factor of US monies to New Zealand Currency. $80,000 US is worth $140,000 in New Zealand. So selling one to the US works out well for the seller.

I thought it was 12-15k to ship.  Not saying you’re wrong, but that sounds really expensive.

Talking about imports too bad the standardbreds couldn't attract the rich Saudi owners like the TBs do

I think it depends on how many horses are on the plane. It used to be $28000 USA for a pallet of 4 horses, if there was 1 horse it was $28k , if it was 2 then it was $14k, 4 would be $7k… that was 10 years ago.

Crash knows what he is talking about. Today, $25,000 to ship one is on the low side.
