Harrisburg
« on: November 04, 2024, 10:56:13 AM »
In an hour or so  the smoke and mirrors show starts.
All the farms hyping their consignments and telling how great everything is.
Meanwhile tracks are closing, handle is down, attendance is practically nothing. Purses are on life support,  Previous owners are getting out or passing away.
Owners like I are not even going to the sale.  I have bought from 2 to 5 yearlings a year for nearly 30 years but none this year.  Its been a fun ride but cant compete with the big stables any more.

Sorry to hear about your decision but probably the right move. Unless you want to load your race horse with drugs, the honest trainer doesn’t have a chance. Been saying for many years , the cheats keep cutting their own throats and not smart enough to realize it. Another 10 years or less there will be no harness racing anymore. Writing is on the wall.

i am a bit confused parked
you think the industry is on its death bed but the yearlings are going for so much money that you cant afford to buy them
seems to me if the industry was on its deathbed the yearlings would be going down in price not up
to be clear i am not debating some of your comments, we all know the unfortunate shit that goes on
if you look closely there is actually a lot of new owners who have come in with lots of money in the last few years
new training center built in ohio, new training center being built in kentucky etc
the industry goes on in spite of itself

Walner brother to Maryland goes for $1mm.  I hope for Andrew that he is just told what to buy and how high to go.  Really tough to justify spending that on a colt.  I would rather have 5 @ $200m or 10 @ $100k than one for a million

I can afford to buy any yearling I want.  By not being able to compete I meant the trainers I use can’t compete as I tell them “ a positive and The horses gol. “ and the big boys have the stake drivers locked up so we are forced to use locals who for the most part are intimidated by them.  Also, where I race there are 2 levels of the stakes program. The big stables have 2 or 3 top horses and there is usually just 1 , rarely 2 divisions of the top class so the others go in the next division down so they go as fast as the lesser division.
So, it is what ot is, I’ll just race out the horses I have and then watch by the wayside.
New owners ? Yes, a very few playboys that are keeping the breeders happy.  But some the prices you see at the auction ,I believe, are manipulated.

The breeders are doing well but take a long look at the rest of the industry.

Like I said.  Smoke and mirrors.    Just go look at the $100,000 + yearling 2 hrs or so after they are sold. The go from extreme pampering the second they are sold, to the dungeon to wait to be shipped.  Ever been in the holding barn ??   Scary….
