Oh, geez. I watched the reply and he did indeed take a bad step in the stretch. That's a shame if true. Really a nice horse.

Agreed. As far I know, 99% of all indemnity coverage I've heard of is mortality only. I don't even know if carriers are still offering surgical coverage because I haven't heard of it in over 30 years. The only performance coverage I've heard of is (stallion) fertility. So in this case, the insurance would only pay a claim if he died or if they had to put him down.

Equine Asset company paid out the ENTIRE $6500 surgery on my filly 4 years ago at the New Bolton clinic who fractured her leg during a race and required screws. Things like torn tendons are NOT covered. The add on emergency surgery coverage premium was only $99.00. The premium is around 3-4% of the insured mortality amount. You have to take out the mortality coverage to ge the $10,000 emergency surgery rider. A $100,000 amount would cost between $3000-4000 most likely for the year plus the $99.00 emergency policy.
