Losing the whip.
« on: May 05, 2024, 10:04:59 AM »
Yesterday's Ky. Derby, a whip went flying just before 1/16th pole in the battle for second between Forever Young and Sierra Leone. Alot of rough housing and grabbing.

Harness-wise...Would losing a whip somewhere along the mile journey have serious consequences to get home safely?(or is it wrapped so tightly around wrist u cant lose it.). Trying to remember last time a harness driver lost whip in-race. Does it happen more often than we think?

I'd like to know why they can't card a race or two each night with no whips allowed and see how the public responds in wagering each one. And be fair and not make it nw's ham sandwich either! Or give the trainer a say if they want or not for the driver to carry a whip in the race at entry and note it in the program. What would it hurt to try?

The bettors on here already cry every time a driver gets beat. Can imagine how much they would cry the race was set up if stuttered not whipping and slashing

yep, i lost the whip halfway through the stretch while on the front end and got beat a head. Figures, as I would have gotten IT ALL had I won, but if I had a whip I might have gotten beat more (LOL!)

Beating a horse is just telling them they are tired! Thats why you will not see a top driver brutalized one! They use their hands to keep them alive!

How did Stanley Dancer’s horses keep going forward when he was continually whipping hard in the day??

Whip, a ribshot, coming in on opponent, actually grabbing an opponent to stay ahead at wire for second..
Tyler Gaffalione has to pay the authorities a visit.

Have you ever seen Mike LaChance keep one alive? The guy needed rotator cuff surgery every 6 months due to his absolute perverse pleasure of using the whip. Before just about all driving jurisdictions implemented whipping rules where you can’t raise your whip above your shoulder and each hand must have a hand hold at all times. Some guys like Trevor Henry in Canada looked like they were fly fishing for brook trout.

Back in the 70s at Freehold,  Herve Filion was fined  $ 100 , for loaning his whip to another driver who had lost his whip

Sounds pretty tough......but he loaned his whip to another driver in the same race, at the top of the stretch.

"Just The Facts Ma'am Just The Facts"
A sports coach needs a whistle.
A Family Medical Doctor needs a stethoscope.
A harness horse driver needs a whip.
A harness horse driver needs to whisper (not holler) to his horse in a language it can better understand.
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.
