Claimers that became great sires. Park Place. Any others ?
« on: January 11, 2024, 01:36:57 PM »
 I watched Park Place in a 15,000 claimer. At a half mile track, from the 8 post he went out got position pulled first over and grinded out the win going away  at 9/2, went on to be a top sire.

A top sire of what?  Name me one horse by Park Place other than Martha Maxine that people would recognize the name of... and they didn't even know what that one was for years.   ngc3

That is a great trivia question, and probably requires someone like Alan Leavitt or Hollywood Hayden for a handful of names of horses from the 70's and 80's who might fit that description.  I would think that a horse who was initially bought for a smaller farm's state sire program who "out performed" expectations might be on the list?

These days it is almost impossible for it to happen, as feats on racetrack at 2 and 3 tend to drive 99% of the horses who are put into stud (so they never wind up in claimers);

interesting question
 but lets be real, park place was nowhere near a great sire, he was average at best and only for a short time , around 400 foals i believe
he produced some good raceway horses that raced many years to grind out their money
he had a few foals go sub 150 as aged pacers which is not bad
almost all the colts were gelded so we can assume they were not perfect mannered and no one had any inclination that any of them would be sires
as a broodmare sire he was also ok/decent accounting for a few good ones that also grinded out their money over many years and wins

Exactly my point on all of this.  The poster said the horse was a top sire and great as a sire.  Those are two adjectives that can not be used with this horse as a sire.  No continuing male line at all and very few producing mares.  If you google Park Place standardbred horse nothing comes up other than he was a good raceway horse that won a decent amount of money, no mention of him being a sire at all.

If he thinks this was a top sire than he must think Betting Line is a God  ngc3

How many sires produced 5 sub 50 winners and 132 sub 55 just last year?   One year alone.  I don't have access to Pathway but I'm sure the number is more than a few.  If you go lifetime the answer is dozens .. your boy is barely a pimple in the record books.

we can end this quickly
 if you had a decently bred mare( and also assuming you have the cash to pay for a top stallion) would you have bred it to park place
