Claiming has always been more of a rental program as opposed to an ownership plan. I remember about a dozen years ago at Pocono when they were juicing's at will, how some of these older and ultra game geldings were being tortured week after week.
 For a while, most tracks reduced the number of claiming races. Recently, it appears they are writing them more frequently.

Claimers do almost nothing to promote breeding and the resulting agricultural industry in the state holding the claiming races.
The claimers have to be fed, and I guess that helps agriculture some. 
And the vets LOVE them.
Just a few select trainers who  have an amazing ability to take antique race horses and give them new lifetime marks can do well in them.
A blight on our sport, in my eyes at least.

The above is a particularly inept response to a serious problem. Anyway back to claiming ...

I despise the claiming game but it seems to be a necessary part of a game dictated by wagering. Horse racing is first and last a gambling game and if you don't like claiming, you are wasting your breath unless you can suggest a viable alternative.
