Bangor
« on: October 22, 2019, 05:44:18 PM »
I've raced at probably 15 different US and Canadian tracks but have never been to Bangor. Is it your typical half mile bullring? I was just checking todays results and in the 2nd race a 5-1 shot won but no one had the exacta. It paid out a 7 all on a 5-1 winner. Under $500 in the exacta pool

seriously

Was a great spit when they used to race Friday night, Saturday Night, Sunday afternoon.... Big crowds , good racing but although slot money have kept the races going its not the same. The crowd is marginal at best, ticket punchers unsure what to do & crowd is reminiscent of a senior home...

Nice little track kept in decent condition.  It has a very short stretch so no late closers.  Quite a few Canadians used to come down to race but less lately.  A lot of great young drivers have come through Bangor like Ranger, Ingraham, Mosher, but crowd and handle have plummeted.  Penn National does not promote but does decent job maintaining facility.

bangor is a good track unless its really muddy. no ontrack crowd. 1 teller but great working sams. 9 race handle today 24000  all but 3000 off track. good drivers there. will never be compared to the glory days of meadowlands but a decent track for a small city.

Excellent drivers and trainers.  Damned good judges and steward.  Great facility for racing and hard working grooms.   Honesty and integrity from all concerned.

I guess you could argue Bangor’s racing surface is not bad, but the tracks heyday was years ago before the new barns were even built.  Linc Keene, Warren Strout, Norm Murray, Arnie Stanhope, Earl Richard, John Mollison, a young Walter Case, a young Ronnie Estes (remember those white boots), a young Dave Ingraham, Ray Ireland and the county boys, Clayton Dickinson with all of those “Columbia” horses.  All the Chinbro horses, Dick Seigar’s Romeos Image, Big Legue Star and more. Leigh Fitch, Freeman Parker, Donnie Richards, Bion Pike and more were in their heydays.  The grandstand was full, you could walk to the barns and the racing was slow but fun.  Bangor is the story of many places, a wonderful place, where time and changing tastes have passed them by.....

this is the 135th consecutive year of racing at bangor.the racing now is really good. the guys really go at it and we have 2 drivers that are superstars but no one is here to see it.
the handle isnt as bad as one might think because its a penn national track and it is simulcast everywhere. check the payouts -- not bad.

Thanks for the eloquence Reaper.  Warren Strout was quite a trainer.  It certainly was a fun track to attend in the 70's and early 80's.
