It took me a second too. I was trying to figure out if he meant it in some other context. In about three seconds I realized he didn't and laughed. Is indeed a classic line.

I'd point out that Ms Butz took this interview off on this weirid tangent.  The tenting trip West had no business in an interview related to harness racing especially at the time of one of harnesses pinnacle events. Wendy saw fit to bring it up not just in public but on tv.

Strange interview, no well guided by the interviewer,  but a classic and funny to Americana folk. Belongs in the hof for all humerous interviews not just harness racing interviews

I thought l'd seen and heard it all.  Pierce discusses panning for gold , hunting, fishing and GETTING WENDY ROSS "INTO HIS TENT" .  Then boasts that she "WON'T WANT TO LEAVE".  The dude is Priceless.

The more Pierce talks about his adventures in the wild, the more I think that is retirement was a forced detention for whatever and now that the two years are up he will announce that he is coming back to drive in January.   Same as Pelling who did a 10 year retirement .  Ten years to the day and he comes back and is a non-force.  a nobody.
