"Money" Drivers
« on: October 26, 2016, 11:52:02 PM »
Okay...IMHO there aren't any drivers around today that can match the savvy and patience of drivers past...name your fave money drivers, and explain why..what I amlooking for are drivers who could get one home when their own money was on the line. or sit on an obviously fit animal for weeks until the best opportunity came to score at the windows...I'll give a few that I've crossed paths with...Chicago... Stan Banks, Carmen Alessi,Del Pletcher..Jim Dolbee....New York...George Phalen...Norman Dauplaise...Ken Mc Nutt.....Detroit. ...Terry Buter....Yvon Demers....Chet Dewbre....Ohio... Mel Turcotte...Terry Holton...Danny Ross...Jim Nash....Eastern Seaboard...Charli e Fitzpatrick...Mik e Gagliardi....Wind sor....Ken Hardy....Californ ia...Steve Desomer...Marc Aubin....Jim Grundy....

You can't leave out Harold "The Hog" Storey. And Dave Marshal. Some very patient men, when needed to be.

Eddie Lohmeyer's stock always seemed to race better when they resided in Dave Elliott's barn at Showplace....

maybe......but we're talkin driving......bett ing   and winning.  eddie didn't fire too many blanks.

quick eddie story. he was an avid pilot. didn't even think he knew who I was. one night, he had a filly in the same out of state sirestakes that I did. I was learning to fly at the time. I introduced myself, told him I was getting my pilots license, asked him if he was flying to the race and if so could I tag along? sure he said. I asked where he kept his plane and id meet him there. he said in the corn field behind my house. huh?? that's where he kept 3 "taildraggers". we left in daylight but I was amazed at our landing in complete darkness. he radioed his wife Vicky to let her know we were "commin in". she goes out in her housecoat and drives their car up and down a grass strip to chase the deer off. then she positions the car at the end of the strip with the headlights shinning down the strip. down we come with a perfect landing. I thought I was in a freakin movie.

He should have been a bit more careful when he got in that funny race at Yonkers with Benny and Ken McNutt...took a long time to get out from under that mess...

there were no "gambling" money drivers at the meadowlands mho. that big mile track broke every gambling outfit that came there.

lachance- kosher boys
wing and Doherty- babe and cookie
remmen and Detroit guys- al mugazy
new England guys- Charlie ginzberg
gagliardi- gagliardi
herve- herve

etc, etc

you just could never control a race there. too wide open with too nuch talent
