Milo Yiannopoulos preached mass deportations to the heavens. Then he experienced the not-so-pleasant machinery of mass deportation himself.
The far-right provocateur, who once demanded that America deport “millions and millions and millions of people,” appeared on Piers Morgan after ICE detained him, shackled him and ultimately deported him to Britain.
And Milo sounds like a very different man.
“I don't think I've ever been afraid before, like I was [in] the last week,” Yiannopoulos said. “For the first time I know what it feels like to be really, really terrified.”
Then he described his big epiphany:
“I didn't really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America.”
Yiannopoulos said agents put his hands and feet in restraints and chained them together.
“They treat everybody who's arrested like an MS-13 gang member,” he said. “And it hurts a lot more than it looks like on television.”
He described being shuffled between detention and correctional facilities, never knowing what was happening or where he was going.
“It was humiliating and it was disorientating,” he said. “It was physically degrading. It was frightening.”
There is enough irony here to power a small city.
Yiannopoulos enthusiastically supported Trump's immigration crackdown and declared just last year: “We have got to deport millions and millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters.”
But what makes his interview worth hearing isn't the irony. It's what happened when the cruelty he had treated as an abstraction became something happening to his own body.
Yiannopoulos said that after his release, a simple fall down some stairs triggered memories of being shoved down steps in custody. He found himself weeping for an hour.
Then came an admission you don't often hear from someone who built a career out of mocking other people's sensitivities.
“I think maybe in the past I've been a little bit blasé when people talked about their trauma, a little bit kind of cavalier when people talked about, you know, stuff kind of lingering with them,” he said.
“But I get it now. And I wouldn't wish it on anyone.”
Millions of immigrants have spent years describing fear, humiliation and degrading treatment inside America's detention system. Milo Yiannopoulos didn't understand what they were telling him.
