On the tail end of the FL fiasco...rumors are swirling...it's normally not all rumor when there's talks with potential buyers...and the seller neither confirms, nor denies. This could be massive. Santa Anita and Gulfstream.

Gulfstream sits on land that is worth too much money--racing loses money so taking the cash by selling the land makes sense.

When the Florida horsemen recently decided to oppose decoupling-that certainly accelerated the idea of selling.

California has NO casinos, and the Santa Anita purse account is overpaid by $6mil-so when 1/ST ended in racing in Northern Cal in hoping that would help rejuvenate Southern Cal racing and it failed--that also most certainly helped the decision to sell the property, which is worth tens of millions. .

Bottom line--racing doesn't make any money and the land is worth too much to continue racing in Hallandale or Arcadia.

hmm, traditionally yes the story of land value being worth more than a race track , golf course or shopping mall usually held true
not so sure now
people are leaving California in droves for good reason so unless government  are building homeless encampments on it I'm not sure who is paying top dollar for the land
Florida was much better but even it is now having hard times,  the insurance costs  for homes are astronomical and the low Canadian dollar is forcing many Canadians out , so again does Florida really need more condos and luxury homes
having said that if you own racetracks and someone comes up with a huge offer i guess you can sell it

Just an FYI...He does not own the tracks anymore. The company that owns the tracks is owned and controlled by his daughter.

Until the decoupling hurdle came up, Stronach was pro-racing at Gulfstream, yes, because they had a casino. They wanted to further develop the property---not shut down the track and develop the property that the tracks sits on. There was talk about shutting down the backstretch (like what they did at the Meadowlands), however, that too had nothing to do with shutting down the track. When the access to capital markets issue came up, that's what brought decoupling to the forefront.

I have no idea what Stronach's true desire, motivation, and intention is. I don't think she was ever committed to racing like her dad was. But, once the capital markets and strategic partners say decouple, it's going to be mandatory. At the end of the day, it's the simple economic principle...highe st and best use. If she wants to close, they close. I think the horsemen need to figure out what assurances they can get, what they will accept and not accept, and decide whether or not they can make a deal. If not, folks, it's back to Hialeah! LOL.
