KY racing and purses, for the most part, benefit from revenue received from the historical horse racing machines. The HHR's have been adding to purse monies more every year. Check out the Kentucky Downs thoroughbred meet!!! It's amazing.

Also, in the last 40 years, KY racing went from lucrative, to deathbed, back to lucrative again. Especially the KYSS.

Ironically, the KY horsemen who suffered through some lean times get to watch Burke, Takter,  Alagna and other east coast trainers take 80% or more of that new KY gold.  The large print giveth and the small print taketh away....step right up

Breeders have always run this business.  With the shipping of semen Ky is open to the world.
Big deal for trainers to go to Lex sale and big purses so if they get a good horse they skip most of the SS where they train and ship of to Ky.

Aren't the monies from the HHR's considered subsidies?

Kentucky Downs tbreds card maiden races for around 150k. Short meets and they pile the historic racing "slot" money on.
