senior citizen day at monticello 8-31-23 thursday
« on: September 01, 2023, 03:43:16 AM »
FYI, it was an aged horse day as the winners were as follows.

1-7year old
1-9 year old
2-10 year olds
2-14 year olds

Aged horses with more experienced and perhaps back class beating their younger rivals?

All opinions welcome on this topic!

That’s because so many of the younger horses at MR are just slow. I’ve seen qualifying times of younger horses at MR wondering if they could race at the old Georgetown or Green Mountain racetracks. However I glad to read that some older horses at MR a in good enough shape to still race.

T-breads are so fragile and the riskiest of all horses to own.

Can you image thoroughbreds running 2 heats on the same day?

It amazes me that every single pound is a factor to them.If they're so worried about weight, then why do they run with their tails down and elastic bandages in the slop? A muddy tail & 2 muddy wraps have to weigh 5-10 lbs. SMH

A vet I respect once told me that all performance and race horses other than ours need their tales down for balance and muscular "continuity" and Standardbreds do not because of the sulky. It acts as the continuity of the moving animal and provides balance. May be a lot of Kentucky windage, but this is what he told me.

Would be a good time for the harness world to go after the thoroughbred betters who are dropping like flies dur to the recent spate of breakdowns. Tbred racing is hurting right now.

I posted on another t bred board a random Pocono 30 claimer race with 6 horses.  Each horse had over 150 LT starts and are still going strong. And they werent even in their teens agewise.

It aint likely to occur but the USRA and regional tracks should be taking advantage of the beauty and durability of the standardbred

Here's another thought. Harness trainers are VASTLY superior to Tbred trainers by virtually any definition. At every level. I am not talking about a Lukas or a Zito. those guys would succeed at almost anything. But the knowledge, horsemanship, adaptability to lameness, etc. WE BLOW THE GALLOPING GOONS AWAY!!

Bello I am not sure thoroughbred bettors are ripe for harness tracks to grab their bets. It seems to me that at Saratoga there can be more money in one exacta or triple pool than many harness tracks have in a total day. That doesn’t mean I know if t-bred betting is down, I do not. But harness betting is up 4.5% according to the USTA. This I find amazing when week after week the USTA reports all the drug positives going on. Maybe most fans don’t read fines/suspensions that we participants read.

https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Report_New_York_Thunder_was_injected_14_days_before_fatal_injury_123

Good points Kojak and it will not be easy, but Saratoga and Tbred racing has a huge black eye right now and are in and will continue to be in the midst of horrible publicity and loss of bettors.

Regarding the USTA publishing violations, that is far more than you will ever get from the t'bred world.

New York Thunder was getting corticosteroid fetlock injections on a regular basis. He was scratched lame a couple of times including a Stakes at woodbine and numerous times on multiple vet lists. No tbred data base wlil make any of us aware of that.

Horse should NOT have been racing and the general public knew NOTHING. Thoroghbred racin as we know is in for a major backlash which has already started.

Watch our professional drivers at the Big M tonight and you will see almost no whip use. Watch the boys beat the shit out of their hoses at Saratoga tomorrow.

THIS IS WHY THE TIME MY NEVER BE BETTER FOR THE STANDARDBRED INDUSTRY TO GET SOME POSITIVE MILEAGE.

But they won't because at the end of the day, it is racino revenue that keeps it going.

I just read the article you attached and the trainer did some bad things for sure. Who was protecting this valuable horse? I want to tell everyone more about this horrible accident. I had taped the races that day so I was able to watch this race many times. Not knowing what the trainer did, I was disgusted with what the jockey Tyler Gaffalione did in the stretch. New York Thunder had a 5-6 length lead and no one was going to beat him. But Gaffalione hit this horse very hard two times. It was immediately after the second whipping that the horse broke his leg and went down. No one has taken issue with this. I heard nothing from NYRA, the NYRA tv jocks, trainers or even Andy Serling who is not shy. I guess the good old boys club didn’t want PETA asking more questions than necessary. Shame on everyone involved in this tragedy.

(Copy and paste)
The eldest thoroughbred that I have heard of was a horse named Time to Bid who last raced in 1998 at age 13. As far as I know there is no specific rule age limit for racing a thoroughbred runner. Apparently, the thinking is: if a horse is cleared to race, deemed fit to race, it can be entered.

  • MTP1972: One year a long time ago I cashed IRS tickets for some people totaling around $40,000 making around $4000 doing so. I picked up thousands and thousands in losing tickets, kept programs and a daily log of how I did. When I filed my tax return that year and claimed them as losses I was audited by some old fart who didn't know shit. At the end of the audit he said I showed enough proof I lost the money back and he'd submit it in his report. 6 months later I get a notice from IRS saying my proof wasn't good enough and included a tax bill of $12,000, which I never paid because after 10 years they forgave it. Unforunately my state piggybacked on it and sent me a tax biil for $3200 which I disputed and they kept adding on interest and late fees. Finally 2 years later my bill was up to $8000 and they sent a wage attachment to my employer si I got fucked big time.

Unforunately at that time if your winnings were over $5000 they automatically took out 28% + another 3% for NJ State Tax leaving me with only $3800 from a $5500 ticket.
