yes there alot of trainers who produce an make a profit. I think its more of the race horse guys vs babies. Yonkers, chester, pocono and all of ohio. Ohio if you can stand the cowboys but its hard to keep a horse good all year there. Get a trainer who is willing to put up or shut up meaning they put their own money and go partners.....most deal trainers dont rrally care and get short on money and then the horses get shorted

As an owner done both. Overall have done well. Need lots of luck, a little skill to find someone you can trust. On the deal you have little control. As owner paying all the bills, you can be involved in the decision making. Not to say you tell the trainer what to do, but in the end, it is your horse. If you dont like him, walk your horse out of the stall and go elsewhere. The "deal" you are kind of locked in. Which way makes most financial sense, is for the most part a crapshoot. Dont want monthly bills as you spent all your money on the horse itself, then maybe the deal is best. You can make money, the people on here are mostly sewing sour grapes though. And yes, you can loose your shirt, which is way easier.

If you have to ask, or this is a deciding factor,  it means you cannot afford to be an owner.   Go buy a food truck.

As a trainer, the only deal I had was pay your training bill! Deal trainers suck!

If you can afford the ones who race for good money you might make money, cheap ones, you can lose as much as you can afford.  Babies are a crap shoot, even the best bred ones can falter in training.  It's fun if it's your play money, most after spending too much, start buying good ones or get out.

8% of the top bred yearlings grow up to turn a profit.
