Lucien Fontaine was Carmine's buddy. He was outstanding as well. He looked like he was playing a fiddle with his whip.

It’s so funny how you remember Lucien using his whip like a fiddle, I always wanted to emulate that when I got my license but never had the balls to try .. 😂
Lucien was the man , although my family claimed our first horse off of him , not because we thought we could improve over Lucien but because his second trainer who was grooming the horse was so bad..we ended up
winning two in a row at Yonkers with him and Lucien claimed him back..But ur right , his fiddling style of the whip was pretty cool..

Larry had a charming way about him that probably convinced many drivers to go dead on occasion. 😂

Well I read it.. I don’t believe he said that about himself.. Ronnie Gurfein probably felt that way about him.. In Jewish we would have called Larry a mensche… you couldn’t help but like him he was/is a nice guy.. but he was a gambler .. he just may have been a little more obvious about it than others.. 😂
His brother Peter was a real nice guy.. Is he still around?

I spent a summer running bets for a gambler at Monti and had the chance to spend saturday nights at Club Escoffier, I belive it was called..
Leon Greenberg brought Larry upstairs to his table after Larry's horse ran 4th and gapped the top 3 by double digit lengths- in those days there were only 3 trifectas on the card.
"Its bad enough you gap the field in a trifecta race, but on a Saturday night, Larry?"
