September 14, 2020 Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s decision to cut $20 million in funding to New Jersey’s horse racing industry is being met with criticism from two local Republican lawmakers who say the governor is jeopardizing the industry.
The funding was signed into law in 2019 as a way to help Monmouth Park (thoroughbred racing), the Meadowlands (thoroughbred racing and harness racing) and Freehold Raceway (harness racing) bolster purses and increase races, according to a press release from the New Jersey Assembly Republicans.Last year was the first year for the program, which was designed to run for five years, and proved to be successful while meeting or exceeding economic growth benchmarks in the 2019 law, according to the press release.
“The state’s horse racing industry stands alone in providing economic, environmental and entertainment values like no other business in New Jersey,” Assemblyman Ron Dancer (R-Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Burlington) was quoted as saying in the press release.
“With an estimated 42,000 horses on more than 7,200 farms that consist of 176,000 acres of tax-paying open space and green pastureland, the horse racing and breeding industry provides more than 13,000 jobs with a majority of the jobs being held by thousands of blue-collar New Jersey workers.
“With unemployment in the state at historic levels, it is necessary and essential to continue the investment in the economic powerhouse that we know the horse racing industry to be,” Dancer said.
Asked for a comment by Newspaper Media Group about Murphy’s reported decision to cut funding from the horse racing industry, Dennis Drazin, the chairman and CEO of Darby Development LLC, the operators of Monmouth Park, said the reported action “is not a final decision. The budget process is ongoing and we are hopeful the subsidy is restored.”
A message left by Newspaper Media Group seeking comment from officials at Freehold Raceway was not returned.
Newspaper Media Group reached out to a spokesman for the governor to obtain Murphy’s response to the Republicans’ press release regarding the funding reduction, but a statement from the governor was not provided.
Assemblyman Rob Clifton (R-Monmouth) was quoted in the press release saying, “Horse racing is an industry that employs thousands of people directly and indirectly, and these cuts will have far-reaching negative effects in our communities.
“If it were to happen, it would put more New Jerseyans out of work and on the long line waiting to get benefits that may never come from Gov. Murphy’s Labor Department. It is an insult that borders on cruelty,” Clifton said.
According to the press release from the Republicans, as Murphy signed the legislation into law a year ago, he noted the importance of the horse racing industry as “a key economic engine, supporting thousands of jobs and attracting tourists and fans from around the world.”

LET THE TRACK OWNERS FUND THE PURSES
Here's a idea..
Why doesn't each track use a percentage from the betting revenue to form a purse account? Each track can draw their purse amounts from that account. Thus the more the betters bet at that track the higher the purse for each race can be!
Just a thought

Here's a fucking thought..... the free handouts have ended.... if this "industry" cannot stand on their own two feet then stick a fork in them. While 20 million may not seem to be alot in this budget, that 20 million is supporting a dead industry and can be used in far better ways. No more free lunches 11.wp
Well said, sir. I would also like to point out, that the to local Republican lawmakers, lied through their teeth. They said the Governor of New Jersey was jeopardizing the industry, by giving lying, useless whores, a &20 million dollar handout. The individuals who have jeopardized the industry, are the WHORESMEN, the INCOMPETENT STEWARDS, the NEGLIGENT and CORRUPT STATE REGULATORY AGENCIES, and the IGNORANT, USELESS, SCUMBAG OWNERS, who don't care what happens to the horses they own, as long as they are making money. Let's not forget the SPINELESS, GREEDY TRACK OWNERS, who don't give a shit about the public. These are the "people" who have jeopardized the industry.
Sincerely, Silent One

If Trump didn"t cut the crap out of the budget Murphy would not be looking for money..
He has to make cute because Washington sent him nothing!!!
Roll the film :" Trump promises the country everyone will get a BIG stimulus check. Its going to be big. Bigger than the first stimulus check!"

Yonkers does this
Meadowlands also does this
the subsidies also assist these tracks

So now N.J. Republicans care about horse racing? How nice.
Not so much when Christie appointed a real estate baron to head a study/committee on keeping the Meadowlands as a racetrack a few years ago. Like hiring a fox to guard the hen house.
Not so much when they were in the casino's pockets, taking money from even out of state interests, while distorting and misrepresenting the message during the slots ballet initiative.

NJ has a 10B projected deficit in 2021. There is zero chance a 20m subsidy get approved. They better figure out how to survive off handle + sports betting revenue.
If not they are toast.
A lot of ploppers may be disappointed?
I believe I saw that New Jersey passed a 2021 budget Friday that Murphy says he will sign.
I also believe it includes 15 million for horse racing.

ok so lets do away with horse racing, no more subsidies, which by the way are a pitence compared to the money racked in by casinos on their property in their buildings
so assume some of those people cannot find work, who can right now , so they just go on the unemployment/covid free money relief train
i would rather have them working and contributing something
the govt is going to have to pay one way or the other
at the end of the day who cares, country so far in debt it will never see the end of the debt so just print more money and let the good times roll

Many think Gural OWNS Pinky Downs, he doesn't, he has a lease for a specific time frame. Gooooofffrrrrraaa allllllll was awarded a license to run a Sports Book operation by the state of NJ. Meaning Goooooofffffrrrrr raaaaalllllll would have assumed all the risk and profit much like Vegas does with their sports books.
Goooooffffrrrrraa aaalllll declined and it is my understanding Goooooofffffrrrrr aaaaaallllllll didn't want the risk or associated costs with the Sports Book operation at Pinky Downs. So he sold that license to Fan Duel (basically he auctioned it off to the highest bidder), received payment for the license and then gets a % of the profits that were agreed upon at the time the license transfer took place. Fan Duel pays the state of Knew Joerrrrssseeeyyyy taxes and so on, not Goooooffffrrrrraa aaaalllllll Inc concerning the Sports Book operation.
Hopefully this makes things fairly clear to you Gooooofffffrrrrrr aaaaaallllllll Ass Kissers 11.wp 11.wp 11.wp 11.wp 11.wp

He has not sold his license, The Meadowlands/Gural owns the license. He has partnered with FanDuel to run his operation for him. They have signed a long term deal, but I'm not sure the length in years is public? if so I don't know the length?
Just like Wrigley Field recently announced DraftKings would put a retail sportsbook in or around the stadium.
Most casino's & racetracks partner with one of the larger sites........... DraftKings, FanDuel, William Hill, BetRivers, SugarHouse or PointsBet Ect..
Though some of the established Vegas casino's like BetMGM or Caesar's Casino have their own dedicated sites.
I believe New Jersey has 17 license's available and each license has 3 skins...... (meaning each master license can have 3 brands under it)
