Gotta love Howard's first race call this aft (tue) at Monti....Deveaux goes wire to wire at 3-1..laying the left hand into his charge a couple times upper lane and then ather strong one 50 ft. from line, up by a couple lengths.
First time I can remember any announcer in deep stretch call..."jimmy..you can put the whip away"
Does Deveaux have excessive whipping problem..
I see a nice kicking fine in latest suspension/fine list

to be exact..
" jimmy , youre homefree..you can put the whip away"
4 smacks top lane...one more in front of toteboard..
up a couple
Strong medicine..not necessarily the wrong med in this case.

No, JcToronto that is a call that Howard uses at least a few times a week. Wasn't a political comment on overuse of the whip. Frankly, while I have a more positive view of his racecalling than many on this site,
that particular phrase annoys me. It's not as if the driver can hear him.
-
I WAS TOLD THAT WHEN HOWARD WAS A KID, HE WOULD HANG OUT AT yr AND rr AND GIVE HIS OWN RACE CALLS IN FRONT OF THE MONITORS. MONTI WOULD NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT HOWARD OIL.
-
He would call the previous night replays at Roosevelt. Unsure about Yonkers. Was backup announcer at Foxboro before landing at Monticello about 35 years ago.
-
He was legendary at Rosey.
I think he does a good job at the once Mighty M
-
Agreed, Toothman. How he can do this race after race for over three decades at a track a shadow of what it once was, is astounding.
-
But in all fairness hes not that old of driver and at least he try's to win races not tank them or pull them to last and no effort at all like the mertons do daily .maybe a bit excessive but I'll bet him anytime on a horse with some go
-
When horses break...fall...im pede all other drivers...the announcer is instructed to "turn on" his speaker wired to poles to tell other drivers....we have a horse down in backstecth....rec all...tractor on the track....loose horse...etc....dr ivers know 4 sure...they hear quite fine
-
come to think of it your right...he can be slow on picking up breakers, when horses leave the course, but i cant remember where he was derelict on dangerous situations?
and, of course, we had the best marshall ever
-
Who was the marshall ?
-
Remember some of the names he used back in the day? HOLLYWOOD Tom Devitas , Bonnie Sunshine Cox, The General Bubba Washington.
-
I REMEMBER HE WOULD SIT IN FRONT OF TOTE BOARD AT ROOSEVELT AND YONKERS THAT HAD TO BE LATE 70 OR EARLY 80
-
THE MARSHALL CALLS THE PACERS
-
Who was the marshall ?
The Grand Marshall I remember was Joan Pepper
-
Hunter Oaks parked the first half in one of the races and he says "Hunter your wasting your time on the outside"!!! LOL

Sa I'll Row, I think The Marshall calls the Pacers, was Max Brewer's catchphrase at Monticello.
Concerning another poster's comment about announcers warning drivers of a fallen horse, etc, one of the best, Bill O 'Donnell, told me drivers generally cannot hear the announcer's warnings. I have not heard of speakers wired to the poles, but some tracks have used flashing red lights.

You are correct Max Brewer (rip) did say " The Marshall Calls The Pacers "...
I was in a couple of races where there were wrecks back in 80s at Monti and I never could hear the track announcers warnings ( then again my wife is always telling me I'm deaf) LOL..

I remember Charlene (Sherry) Clouser.
Great marshall!
-
Twiggy, at Roosevelt Raceway was an iconic Marshall.
-
I don't know how Devaux gets away with it. He just pounds horses with the whip. How does he not get fined for excessive use of the whip?
