Title: Will legalized sports betting come to Northville Downs? It's a long shot
Post by: Rabbi Of Racing on January 07, 2020, 03:53:20 PM
Hometownlife.comP ublished 7:41 a.m. ET Jan. 7, 2020    Imagine if visitors to Northville Downs could place a $2 bet on the ponies and a $100 wager on the Colts, Broncos or any other NFL team.

With the recent legalization of sports gambling in Michigan, adding a sports book to the lone harness-racing venue remaining in the state makes logistical sense.

However, the odds of such a marriage is a long shot due to language in the legislation signed in December by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

As the law stands now, only the three existing casinos in Detroit — Greektown, MGM Grand and Motor City — and tribal casinos spread across the state would be allowed to apply for a sports-gambling license.

"There would have to be an amendment to the current law for (Northville Downs) to be eligible to apply for a license,"  Michigan Gaming Board Communications Director Mary Kay Bean said.

This reality frustrates Downs owner Mike Carlo, who has been looking to add a complementary form of gambling to his downtown Northville track to help boost business during a time when horse racing's fan base is aging faster than millennials are latching onto it."I can only hope so," Carlo said, when asked if one day his establishment would be granted a sports-betting license. "It's about time sports betting has been legalized. It's good to see the governor taking a proactive stance.

"I'm sure there are people in southeastern Michigan who would rather have a (sports-betting) venue closer to their home so they wouldn't have to drive downtown every time," he said. he 50-acre property that hosts Northville Downs is enduring a pending sale to residential developer Hunter Pasteur Homes, however, the transaction has been anything but a runaway due to hang-ups in the developer's efforts to get site plans  approved by Northville's government.

Carlo has vowed to relocate the harness racing venue to another site not far from Northville if the property where the track currently sits is ultimately sold.

"We're in the game and we're definitely planning on staying in the game," he said.

But I grew up.

Got enough education to get a decent job.

Then I had the balls to go out on my own with 2 kids, a house etc to pay for.

And now gots $2.5 Mil in the bank now.

And 2 paid for homes worth another $800k.

And retired at 54. And do what I want.

I came up from nothing.  Nothing as in being an orphan at age 5.

And you think I'm scared of some 9th grade dropout Goober taking a swing at me?

I'd give you the first swing with my eyes closed.

Calhoun you have to stop reading your BS headlines, nobody cares.
Tim/Humphrey/Faggot,

You're 85 years old and a never was, never will be loser.

You need to stop being so jealous.  It's not my fault you're 30+ years older than me and you use a cane and walker.

It's not my fault.

Go back to telling the world about your black-box betting system.

A real test

I already told you all that.

Did I know Al Mugdski?  I knew who he was but no, I didn't know him.  Why would I?

Did I know Pony Tail?  I knew who he was but no, O didn't know him.  Why would I?

Did I know Super Fly, the little Arab guy?  Yes, barely.

All these guys hung around the $50 window 2nd floor Clubhouse down the small ramp from the dining room, especially the short Arab who loved to bet the OFF. They all watched the races on a couple shitty TVs.  I liked being higher and watching outside.

I usually only went up there to say hi to and take a cup of coffee to my friend Leroy, the Security guy there who i knew better from the grandstand at DRC where he also worked.

I was more likely on the 3rd or 4th floor grandstand.  5th floor to smoke if it was open.

Any more questions?

Wolfie did always look pissed. Probably the nicest of guys....NOT!!!
Only knew John as Racetrack John. Would always tell you who he liked and wanted money to make bets. A taller guy hung out around the second floor down ramp of the clubhouse. I know you would have seen him. There about every night.
