Subject: Lasix
I am shocked that the SBOA would oppose the request we made to ban Lasix in two year old races in 2020 and 2021 and in the Meadowlands Pace in 2021. As you know, only seven two year olds raced with Lasix last year and the Hambletonian has been raced withoutLasix since the beginning. With racing under siege because of the deaths at Santa Anita and the fact that almost all of the major thoroughbreds have adopted much stiffer requirements other than Monmouth we would think that the horsemen would view this asa gesture on our part to the public to show that the health of the horses is a vital concern. By opposing this essentially we are doing just the opposite which is a very risky strategy. I am quite certain that by next year the Federal Government will havetaken over because the current system is not working as your members are well aware. Hopefully the opposition is not because your members are using Lasix to mask other drugs but it seems very strange that the SBOA would oppose this. It is not my intent toadvocate the banning of Lasix for overnight racing I just want to make a statement that we do feel strongly about the fact that our horses should be protected. If I am unable to persuade the SBOA to drop their opposition it would be my intention to cancelthe Kindergarten Classic next year along with the Meadowlands Pace in 2021. I think we should be working together and not fighting with each other and I really am disappointed that the SBOA does not understand how critical this issue is from a public relationsstandpoi nt. There are far more animal lovers in America than there are horse racing enthusiasts especially now that they see the catastrophic death rate in the thoroughbred game.

- Gural has barely scratched the surface of fully monetizing The Meadowlands. Barely.

I truly doubt you could fill a weeks card at ONE track with "clean healthy horses". That's a thing of the past. I'd say 95% of trainers use something. People can't afford not to use something. 4th and 5th place finishes seldom pay the bills. It's a vicious cycle. Eckley is back in Chicago. Nothing else needs to be said about the condition of harness racing. HOW many suspensions are enough to get the boot ?

The sad truth is that nearly all are "dirty" because this is what the sport has come to: cheat or find another career. The horsemen and the vets -- who, by the way, are the ABSOLUTE WORST, like lawyers -- push the envelope everyday and for most, it still isn't enough. I don't think they're all bad people, just people trying to survive doing the only thing they know how.

You make it sound like I am the only one who believes Lasix affects bone density. People smarter than I and undoubtedly smarter than you believe it too.
Well how about this.... heparin prevents blood clots, omeprazole helps GERD, methotrexate for cancer along with chemotherapy drugs and furosemide for heart and kidney failure. There’s many more but with that being said the above mentioned drugs are used by humans on a daily basis and one of the side affects is a bone density issue but without those drugs they’ll probably die anyway. On the other side horses use lasix aka furosemide once a week. What’s worse the horse hemorrhaging????? causing infection, fungus or worse yet scar tissue in his lungs. The majority of studies show the only adverse side affect is dehydration and electrolyte loss. I’ll take that any day over hemorrhage.

Good points but everywhere else in the world, lasix is not used for racing and their horses are doing fine. Perhaps they are treating horses with something else but facts are facts and the fact is if they can race without it, why can't North America?
Have you considered the thought that there are bleeders over there that are not racing because anti bleeding medicatuons such as lasix are not permitted?

For a simple reason, horses across the pond, don't race every week. At most they race twice a month, their best race 8-10 times a year, so the wear and tear factor is not as great as it is over hereHave you considered the thought that there are bleeders over there that are not racing because anti bleeding medicatuons such as lasix are not permitted?

The numbers speak for themselves and given the current climate, they could take the horses away for good and he wouldn't care.
The horse have only remained as a foil for sports betting, nothing more.
Nothing but under 30 year old and under guys betting sports, and none of them can find their way to the racetrack or any of the horse betting machines.
When my friends and I go, the horses will follow.
