Ignore handle at a long term risk to the health of racing. If handle isn't impt just imagine it sinks to 0. The question then is do the blinders come off the public and bean counters and they see tracks like Yonkers like what they are: just a giant form of welfare to a small select group. Sure some jobs come with this the diversion of $ to racing , but my opinion is the public will decide there are other industries this money would be better vested and more jobs sustained.
When the diversion of $ began, I believe there was some expectation that racing would take steps to enhance its prospect of once again being self-sustaining. Clearly that hasn't happened. Just a matter of time to Yonkers being delinked and the oval heading to he used for racing. I already hear state taxpayers that understand complain that a lot if the state dollars are going to Canadians and out of state owners trainers.

All Harness Racing is simply charity for the drivers,owners,trainers.....
with a 25% takeout....it is amazing that M(1) gets over a million
bet....while YR only 1/2 mill.....
YR purses 2x 3x 4x the M(1)
Real drivers at YR M B for the most part until Campbell
returns.

Handle is larger because (in particular order):
1. Yonkers/Pocono allow more trainers that have a reputation amongst gamblers for using peds. These trainers are often short prices and from a gambling view ruin p3, 4 etc. Med and mohawk are seen as a little more regulated.
2. Consistently larger fields. Gamblers like the better payoffs. 3. Outside posts while compromised at mile tracks still have a chance. On 1/2 mile tracks this is very rare.
4. 1/2 mile tracks are almost always inside speed bias. No movement. Closers are compromised at mohawk and meadowlands this is not true.

I would love to see the State distribute $50 million to the state bred program. Taking $40 million from the overnight program and placing it in a NY restricted program would stand the best studs and mares as resident breeders. The only growth of participation in overnight racing if from people outside of New York, with the lion's share of growth from people outside the country.
In the upcoming legislative session, they will be addressing the shortfall of revenue from the casinos. The 4 new casinos are operating at about 50% of their projections. It will be interesting how they add sports wagering to the mix, to offset the shortfall. If they give full privileges to the tracks to take sports bets, overnight racing will become more obsolete and less attractive to lawmakers, as they always focus on the power trends.

Right why compare handle from a year ago? The comparison is in the now and the Meadowlands is losing handle to sports wagering. This will finally put the second to last nail in the coffin for Harness racing. As numbers decline and people go toward legalized sports wagering, the fan base WILL NEVER COME BACK OR HAVE A CHANCE TO GROW. First it was simulcast wagering, then ADW, now legalized sports wagering either at a wager facility or over the internet. The final nail will be decoupling. Once that comes where will the money or support come from? The Meadowlands may offer a place to wager with decent pools. Only decent compared to what's out there. Problem is might help the bettor but Gural sold this to the horsemen to cater to the cartel and they get little of that handle going to the purse account. So we can be joyous in a 2.0mln handle. But years away from it all gone. Why, no VISION FOR ENTERTAINMENT DOLLARS. Plus it's slow, stale, and not very entertaining. Sports wagering you can wager live during games. Wager in quarters or innings. Place bets while you wait 22 minutes in between post.

Harness Racing is for all practical purposes for the owners, trainers
and drivers.....
Grandfathered in deal....that the casinos were forecd to swallow to open their Casino....
In several years there will be 0 people at the track and a very small
amount of off track players...
at that point only several tracks will race live any real racing dates.
A few may race a 20 day race meet just to keep the simulcast license.
Unfortunate but true....
