Would like to point out to wiggles that Horseplop is a fact base web site. tmbz1. Charlottetown had 2 stake races for 22 and 18 thousand that the horse people paid into, and the actual purses were $15450. Fact is CDP doubled there bet with comparison of purses to bet ratio. Wiggles this is not CNN get the facts straight before you go to print. 73cv.2

A NOTE to Wiggles44

I will type this real slowly ....so you will be able to follow my explanation.

More than 15 years ago, the Ontario Government was looking for locations to house their slots.
Instead of having to construct / build locations...they decided to put their slots in racetracks, that were no longer as busy as they used to be, or in buildings on properties owned by the racetracks that were not being utilized.
Amongst those racetracks were small tracks like Hanover , Clinton , Kawartha , Hiawatha and Dresden.  In the early days , the "rent" enabled them to race 2 or sometimes 3 days a week...at better than average purses for the calibre of horses they were racing.

This plan, which also included the large tracks..like London Woodbine Mohawk...was brought to an abrupt halt by the Government  about 5 years ago.......putting a real strain on the breeders..as the halt came early in the year.

Negotiations went on for years and only recently was a new long term plan signed.

The small tracks only race once a week..over a much shorter season........cat ering mainly to cheaper horses...with the odd late closer...and annual visits of the Ontario Sires Stakes programs to beef up interest in getting people into buying   babies.
The slots are still run out of the original properties at the small tracks........and the rent does cover most of the purse money....but only enough for 1 day of racing a week. The races are well attended at these tracks.......bett er crowds than Yonkers and Poconose...and its a fun day of racing

Find a new topic.....your welfare line is old

The other 3 tracks in your list are in New Brunswick and I wouldn't call racing for a  $ 1200  purse  welfae

thanks for the history lesson tubs
I read 3 paragraphs really slow
and you explained how the welfare system works

the money horsemen put aside for promotion should assist them without slots then

Since the government up there has signed a 19 year extension deal with the horse people (the deal actually adds from what they get now) you can look forward to wiggles44 giving updates for aprocomatly 19 years lol.

Great argument. Government should waste money on something no one interested because it's not that much. That's how waste adds up.

A little note for Jiggles.......... ..............$ 200, 000 of the Total purses at Georgian Downs  was for 3 Gold Sires Stake races.  IMO, this is where most of the slot infused money should be going...to promote breeding and owning Ontario Bred horses.
This is radically different from the monies paid out nightly at Yonkers and Poconose

I look forward to your next weeks revealing post.
I'm sure that the presence of Roger Huston, who will be announcing a few races at  Grand River , Hanover  and Leamington next weekend  will be a big boost to the handle at all 3 tracks.

That would be a nice adventure for you Wiggles......foll owing The Voice to all 3 tracks.....and getting his autograph at all three destinations

A photo of you with Roger , posted on this site, would should that you ARE a real fan of harness racing

Hey Jiggles, you were  commenting on the lack of promotion  at the Ontario "welfare" tracks

Check out this link...from a small track that usually only handles $  25, 000 on a good Sunday afternoon...with crowds bigger than Yonkers

They offer a bus trip to bring fans in.....with a meal ticket and race program thrown in...for $ 25............... ....for the 35 mile trip
Has any of the big  US welfare tracks ever done that ..for one of their big days ??? You know the answer

http://standardbredcanada.ca/news/7-16-18/excitement-vic-hayter-memorial.html

So now you have a choice. this Sunday.......if you take a trip to Ontario........a fun day at Clinton...or go to Leamington and meet The Voice

You would know the answer to this......What promotions are on this weekend at "your" welfare tracks  ?

Hey Rabbit

Before you post your weekly numbers..check out the crowd, and read the story. You should be able to read it , they have no words with more than 2 syllables.
This was Clintons' last Sunday of the meet.  The slot parlours stay open 12 months a  year...so "their rent"  will go into a fund to provide purses for next year. And unlike Pokonose and other US slot tracks...the Ontario Government owns all slots in the Province of Ontario, and all the profits after operating expense go back into the Government bank account...to help pay for things like schools and hospitals and health care....NOT into Companies like Mohegan Sun.

WE don't pay health insurance , medications are provided for a small fee, we don't pay for Doctors or Surgeries or followup care at clinics.
Money from slots , higher gas , cigarette and alcohol prices ............reduc e our cost of living.

So keep on bashing small tracks and their purses........all have been providing space for the slots to operate  for years.........whi ch was much cheaper than having to build their own  buildings.  And most of the ones you bash..now only race once a week..........tha t was the new deal created a couple of years ago.    And when the purses seem way out of line to the handle..it is probably Ontario Sired Stake races....which are not paid from the handle...but from a Stake Fund.....funded by the slots, as part of a Government program   to encourage  the breeding farms and Buy Ontario race horses

Its time for breakfast..so I will have to leave you

Take a visit to Ontario some time.. Go to Mohawk on a big purse night...and be part of the crowds..they do get crowds many nights a year.
Go to Western Fair...London...o n a Friday....have one of the best buffets you have ever eaten..and enjoy the races. The buffet is usually sold out......and there will be a nice crowd watching the races
And then on the Sunday , stop by a track like Clinton and see how much fun racing can be

"And unlike Pokonose and other US slot tracks...the Ontario Government owns all slots in the Province of Ontario"

I don't think Ontario owns any slots. The Ontario government just supplies licenses to private companies who then run the slots & pay the government a fee for the privilege. The Ontario government has broken the provence into areas & any slot facility in that area is called a bundle, those bundles were then licensed out to private companies. Those licences/bundles were bid on by the various private companies.

Eyeinthesky Rabbit did not mention any numbers and I have to agree with him that a few tracks could be closing in the near future. You should have addressed this to wiggles 44 and Senor Dick.

Apologies....tryi ng to do it from memory
