Purses will continue to rise. Soon to be second best track in the country. Great location and demographics.

CANCELLING GRAND CIRCUIT RACES DOESNT HELP. 3 TRACKS IN OHIO ARE BETTER, SO IS HOOSIER.

very true. they could have given out more purse money last year but held some back. they cancelled that foolish 250k spirit of ma trot because the locals were not impressed that all the money went to ny/nj owners, drivers and trainers. handle will not go up but that slot parlor is making so much money they have no idea what to do with it.

Build from within. Don't give Money to outsiders.  Don't make same mistakes other tracks have made.

greg merton managed to shoehorn his  way in there but at least he is willing to drive for local owners and trainers now.

they do less than nothing for the bettors there. all they want is to herd them into the slot parlor. the concessions on the track side are abysmal (guess where they want you to go to get better ones) they even bumped up the price of simulcast programs and their own. you would think they would give them away (the ones they print) to get more people to play. in their somewhat impressive simulcast parlor you are lucky if one teller is on duty and absolutely no tellers after 6pm except sat. yes, the purses for their live product are more than twice what they should be but it's a long ship in from the metro ny/nj area. merton thinks it's worthwhile.

Take the welfare money. Why fight it. Nobody is going to bet harness racing.  I don't care if they all play the slots.

foxboro, brandywine, rosecroft and liberty bell were all 2nd level tracks behind yonkers and roosevelt but that was over 45 years ago. you couldn't get a seat at foxboro on a saturday night as 7500 crammed their way in there. now if plainridge gets 35 people other than owners, trainers and drivers relatives they are fortunate.

Through they own laziness and failure to clean up their act, the horse people allowed slots into helping them continue their ways. That very help is/will be their demise. All the horse people are doing is milking it as long as they can. The horse people love to cheat too much.
Their excuse "everybody does it"!
The driver influence on race outcomes is a real hidden story.

I would think one of the greatest challenges is the horse population. The shortage of good quality horses has made it difficult for everyone to step up.

Can’t wait for April.
Anyone hear anything on new trainers or barns coming in?
Defenitely need better stock.
Hopefully the locals reinvested money into their barns to upgrade.
Time will tell.

Wish them well....remember Foxboro in it's day.....John Hogan, his father, Bert and Williard Beckwith, Jimmy Doherty, Bob Tisbert, a young Leo Bauer, a crazy Alexander Savran, Peter Blood and the list goes on and on.....it was a great game back then.  Cobra Almhurst took his lifetime mark there of 2:04 and change with Benny "the whip" Webster behind and Bob Farrington brought Rambling Willie by near the end of his career.

there are no fans anymore. absolutely none.  back in those days everyone knew and had a favorite horse, driver, pass to get in. two page pullout in the boston newspaper. today no one even has a clue when plainridge runs. mon. tues. thurs. fri post time 4 pm. no one goes even if they knew this and do not care if they do. greg merton opens up at 1 to 5 nearly every race and with 400.00 in the win pool nearly impossible to make a bet. exotics underpay also. fantastic for owners, drivers and trainers however. purses 2 1/2 times what they should be.

The purse structure will increase ....the horseman were overpaid last year ....probably a bad decision to run the 250 k trot but I understand managment trying to attract attention to the ridge........walt er case wont be around because child support issues ........and all monies will be taken to pay his obligations.... most likely same chast of characters....... ....as same as last year......

Hearing that Greg Merton will not be coming to the ridge as he is choosing to stay in New York........As far as beckwith and Chris Long goes they will probably show up on monday/tuesday......No young Switzer......purs e structure should be good and managment is more focused on locals I think....they canned the 250k trot which did nothing for local horseman which is a wise move......No t-breds in Mass after 2018 and not sure if they have found new location.....Stro narch and richard fields still have interst in mass......who knows...but horsemans casino account should be well funded.....

Without Merton, would Aldrich take over his spot as top catch driver.
Beckwith would probably try to get a bigger foot in...but he is not in the same class as Merton or Aldrich, in controlling a race

And on the subject of "no thorobreds"..in Mass, before the State gives this money to Mass  harness horsemen who have NOT stepped up and bought good horses to race for the good money...they should make sure that schools and hospitals and seniors homes have adequate funding to meet their needs..before they increase purses for $ 3000 and $ 4000 claimers who masquerade as $ 6000 and $ 10,000  claimers.

The Mass  sire stake program is a joke.....

Conditions...bred in Mass, or the Mare stood in Mass in December in the year before she foaled..or she was boarded at Steve Otools  training center...or the trainer raced horses at Plainridge all year, and the mare although bred elsewhere,  is living in Connecticut, and once took a trip in  a truck to Mass

Despite these open conditions, most of the day to day trainers/owners who race at Plainridge did NOT take the opportunity to own or breed  a Mass baby

I dont know I heard Richard fields of suffolk downs committed 60 mil for a new track in mass.....the problem is land and zoning ......carneys spots raynham and brockton have been shot down.....as far as I know........I think still longshot that t-breds back in Mass......Beckwit h and Chris long cant help themselves playing games on the track.......so many abnormal pools when they are together in a race,,,,,,,,,ask any drivers they are calling for each other????so who knows.....could care less about either one of them coming....dont trust either one of them to be honest......maybe Drew will be there and he was lights out on a 5/8 s better than bartlett who can only race on a half mile as thats his comfort zone............s ee what happens

A very thoughtful post

I hope some of the regular Plainridge  owners / trainers read these last 2 pages

The Mass  pre race drug tests could also be stepped up

The trailer parking lot would be a good place to patrol

Wasn't that where they caught John Nason  last year

When the boys from Maine  were there, in numbers, the racing was always better
they don't drive 4 hours each way to drive around the track twice

Shawn Gray was a big asset....always on GO

You are right about Bet with and Long............. both usually have a "plan"

Tanking a race has little to do with the betting pool. It is a character flaw. These peckerheads have gone dead in every combination of low or high purse, small or large pool. It is just who they are.

Best of luck to all the horsemen and women on the 2018 racing season at Plainridge.
Today is the opener and the weather is miserable.
I’ll be watching and wagering if they race.
19 years and they have come a long way.
Good luck to all that wager!
