WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal agents on Monday searched the home of Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a startling escalation in a criminal investigation that brings renewed focus to the frequent target of Trump administration derision in the final weeks of her reelection bid.
The search of the Minnesota congresswoman's home so close to next month's midterm contests that will determine control of the House and the Senate was swiftly condemned by top Democrats in Congress, who raised questions about the timing given longstanding Justice Department protocol to avoid overt investigative steps involving political candidates in the direct run-up to an election. Omar, an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, said separately that she was being targeted as one of the Republican's "political enemies."
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin last month cited an "ongoing investigation" that he suggested was examining potential fraud on her family's immigration paperwork. "Something's going to happen," he said.
The search was carried out by agents with Homeland Security Investigations, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
Republicans have raised questions about Omar's past since before she was even elected, including asserting that she had married her brother and committed immigration fraud. Omar has broadly denied the allegations as "disgusting lies."
"If we actually move a case forward, it's not a political case. It's actually a case because they did things wrong," Mullin said. "If you decided to break the law or law on the information that you gave to the United States...there's no expiration to that."

“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
“I will not be silenced,” she concluded.
Early this morning, ICE agents raided Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., ostensibly in search of immigration documents, including paperwork that her late father filed when she was just a child.
The Rubicon has been crossed.
Trump is now directing his jackbooted thugs to carry out politically motivated raids on his enemies based on fully fabricated allegations. This is a blatant targeting of Omar because she is an outspoken critic of this regime and, more importantly to the bigoted MAGA base, she’s a Black woman, a Muslim, and an immigrant. They are frothing at the mouth over the prospect of harming her.
This is the kind of thing that you see in crumbling democracies right before the fascists make a concerted effort to permanently seize power. While we can’t say for sure that this tactic will spread, this normalizes sham raids on Democratic politicians and opens the door to a sweeping campaign of state-sponsored terror. Trump knows that he’s headed into an electoral wipeout in the midterms and so he’s desperately reaching deep into the authoritarian playbook.
Expect the administration to push for denaturalizing and deporting Omar next, a longstanding dream of the white nationalist movement. They want to remove every last non-white, non-Christian person from this country but before they can do that they need to demonstrate an ability to strip away citizenship.
Omar isn’t intimidated. Neither can we be. This is the canary in the coal mine. It’s time to take to the streets en masse.
