If you take all the cost of yearlings on the US and Canadian market for 5 years.
and after 1 year as 2 year olds thru 5 year olds
the stats show only 63% of the aggregate amount
will be earned back via purse money.
e.g. The Punisher Stable is in the hole for
$11,000,000 and counting...
The "inventory " of horses the $11 Mill covers certainly
has some residual value.....but training and maintenance
as well as vet, shipping ,staking adds substantially
reduces any income earned via purses.
Looks like you need $5 Million -$30 Million to play
the game longterm...
e.g. Burke Brigade
While trainer Burke takes home a nice salary...
the financiers of the operation may be less fortunate.
The cost of inventory and training/insurance/shipping/vet
puts a major dent in the bottom line.
A recent survey of Tbred owners has shown a staggering
91% Lose $ overall.
With the standardbred a guesstimate is 40% are even
or in the black while 60% in the red.
But.....Having a Stakes winner is what it is all about.
Many will pay dearly for the luxury of owning a
top racehorse.
5 of 6 Yearlings fail to pay their bills/cost.
So bottom line....enjoy the ride.....and have your
wallet ready and fully stocked.

This was a great post! You need to have money to own horses for sure.
-
Racing is primarily for the rich...
The $3000 $4000 and $20,000 claimers are the
ones that actually made the races that cost
substantially more as yearlings...some up to $200k 300K 400K
and more and have nowhere to go except try and sqeeze
out a few $ on the track to maybe get in the black
month to month before being "retired".
Stakes horses?
Only 1 in 25 reach that rarified stature.
Bottom line...a break even or loss is inevitable..
