THIS IS HILARIOUS: Sen. Eric Schmitt was warned that the Jack Smith texts were "unvetted" before the hearing, and he used them anyway. Then the whole thing fell apart on live TV.
According to new reporting from MS NOW, Republican staff on the Senate Judiciary Committee explicitly warned Schmitt's team that the texts they had obtained from the Justice Department were unvetted, and that it was their responsibility to verify them.
Schmitt used them anyway.
Read that again.
He then stood in front of C-SPAN cameras, insisted Jack Smith had attended an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024, and suggested Smith was secretly working with Fulton County DA Fani Willis.
Smith looked confused.
"I definitely did not go to a Hawks game. I'm sure of that."
Schmitt smiled and said, "I think you've already perjured yourself."
Then Smith remembered where he actually was that night: at a women's college basketball game in Maryland, Iowa Hawkeyes versus Maryland. Same date. A quick Google search showed both games were played on Feb. 3, 2024.
And it gets worse.
MS NOW reports that the seat Smith was sitting in was in College Park, Maryland. The seat number in the staff texts reportedly doesn't even exist at the Hawks' arena in Atlanta.
Think about that.
All it would have taken was a few minutes of basic checking. Schmitt was told to verify the information. He skipped that step.
And instead of catching Jack Smith in a lie, he caught himself in one of the most embarrassing moments of the entire hearing.
