Title: 3yo Colt Trotters
Post by: Call Sign Merlin on June 13, 2026, 02:37:58 PM
Very deep group this year - Spencer Hanover, Endurance, American Power, Diabolic Hill, Apex, Ardonne…hell Nix Nacken trotted in 50.1 last night.

Nix Nacken has an amazing stride.  Watch the replay of the race and then watch the slo-mo of the finish as just eats up the track effortlessly.  I have owned many trotters over the years (from 1970 through 1995) and most of then I bought as "mature" race horses after their 3 yo season.  Aside from the usual (vet, assessment of potential soundness issues based on confirmation etc.) the single most important criterion was the gait/stride.  If he stays together, he is my Hambo pick as of today.  Apex is a magnificent creature and may be the "highest" bred trotter ever (based on both Walner and Mission Brief being 1/2/3 of all time for male and female trotters), but Nix Nacken will out-trot him comfortably based on where the two are, as of today.

Bold statement.  I like it. I hope all stay healthy through the year. It will be great racing.

There's never been a better time to own a horse. I've got a couple of three-year-olds racing for big money

I don't think Walner or Mission Brief raced long enough. Top 10....maybe.

Was a very nice colt last year as well with big speed off the end but Zeron could never use him.  See if he matures because the talent is there

Whoever Melander trains this year is lights out! Never seen his horses race like this. The mare he raced at Mohawk looked like it was shot out of a cannon. Found something!!!

Big Ranger.

Outside BT, they're nuts, you're 100% correct:

Big Ranger (Scioto)
 3, In Range-Big Blue Bird    3    3°/2T    1°/1    1/1T    1/1T    1/4T   1:50.3 27.4    *0.10

Apex (BigM)
 3, Walner-Mission Brief    3    3°/3H    1°/HD    1/1Q
1/1    1/H   1:50.3    27.0    *0.10

5   5   Nix Nacken   5-4Q   2°-1   1-1H   1-4H   1-5   1:50.0   *60   26.4

Time-27.1; 56.2; 1:23.1; 1:50.0

14th race Meadowlands 6/12.  Last half in 53.1 (astounding for a trotter)

It's only June!

How fast will these horses be in September/October?
