They are getting the best horses for now. Ofcourse people will bet until the good stock is gone. They are Just like the meadowlands use to be for a few days a yr. Hardly thriving. The meadowlands would be like that every race day. Best of the best. Now you have amish guys driving there living out their dreams of driving at the big M.

owners, trainers, and drivers at the higher levels are making serious money, and some stakes programs are actually richer than decades ago.

Oak Grove handled around 1 million. That is for Saturday and Monday combined. That is anything but thriving. The top 5% in the sport are making money. Everyone else is doing okay or just getting by. Look at the tracks today. Only Yonkers and Plainridge have good purses. Eight tracks and six have okay to low purses.

That’s not accurate at all. Saratoga, Pocono, Meadows and the tracks in Delaware have great purses. Not to mention Scioto. Pocono has 12,500 overnight claimers going for $11,000 purse. Thats not chum change, that’s good money for the average Horseman who races in claiming conditions

i still do not understand why some continue to reference "casino welfare money"
does nobody recall that this transaction was part of the agreement that allowed casinos to gain a foothold by entering via racetracks
time does not diminish nor make an agreement less relevant or legal
if anything the casinos have not held up their end of the bargain at some of the tracks, they do nothing to promote or enhance racing and now would like to welch on their agreement and decouple

Are there any rules at Pocono?

Do they test there?

This is a sample of who you are racing against:

Eckley, Taneyhill, Pena, Chrissman Jr., Belcher, Brittney Dillon, etc al

When they first had their Super Sunday card around 8 to 10 years ago the (3) Invitationals went for $250,000 each, then $200,000, then $150,000 and $100,000 the past few years. On a normal 15 race card their average purse is under $10,000 and the casino is half empty and located in a terrible and high crime area with boarded up houses nearby, with a small prison 2 blocks away.

Harness racing is just fine don't listen to all the negative comments from the losers. New York- Pennsylvania and Kentucky or thriving.

No, rife with criminal activity and a regulatory that defies any known parallel sport's regulatory.

These regulatory should be in touch with law enforcement constantly, not just racing violations being assessed and discussed but actual organized crime activity.

Someone buys into racing, buys horses, hires a trainer, insists on running a clean stable, and goes up against the likes of these drugging, race tampering scum.

Gambling is pretty much done and where it still relies CAW comes in to screw the gamblers when they're not staging, fixing races so they all get their share.  Knowingly racing lame, sick, not ready, dangerous horses, horses that will be a no try, what the heck is that.

Some old lady shoving her cash into a slot machine and some empty suit legislator allowing that money, other clean money an even tax payer money to fund this nonsense.

Pacer 2, you anyone can say antagonistic things, but a thief is a thief, and if they steal from us, excluding the regulatory, cops, seems like a fun option to join in and get a piece, more like a stolen piece back.

These people loading up with cash from this wide spread "thriving" doing it the wrong way might find themself in more danger than they could ever imagine.

If sites like this are monitored by le, fbi, here's a message to them...bang up job you're doing enforcing and preventing  ngc3, next one you bring in of these hopefully takes a detour to the hospital or morgue. Handle it the same way if they stole money from you and yours and destroyed your life with immunity.

The world is divided simply between good and bad, corrupt and with integrity, law abiding and the criminal, paid to protect with eyes closed or open, guess who is winning?

Money is worthless to a rich deceased thief.

If not for the revenue from the casinos half the tracks you say are thriving wouldn't even be here. On track handle and attendance at most of these thriving tracks are next to nothing. They couldn't stand on their own and the purses would be almost nothing.

I knew owners and trainers who used to race for $500 back in the 70's in Delaware and ran over 50 times a year and were hard pressed to earn $10,000. For the people who just got in to racing 10 years ago it's good but most of the old timers who never made money have passed away. Even with the higher purses it's still difficult for the cheaper horses to make money because expenses are so high. The purses aside, business at most racetracks drop every year which certainly isn't thriving.

Oak Grove, KY – The record-breaking season of harness racing at Oak Grove just recently passed the halfway point of the 2026 meet and the Southwest Kentucky track continues to show tremendous year-over-year gains in handle.

With Monday’s (May 25) Memorial Day card run alongside many special days of racing from major Thoroughbred outlets, Oak Grove successfully stayed within the shuffle of horseplayers’ action and posted nearly double the handle year-over-year compared to the 2025 Memorial Day card.

Tuesday’s (May 26) 14-race card similarly showed year-over-year gains with nearly 50 percent more bet compared to the same card from 2025. Oak Grove’s handle remains up roughly 28 percent year-over-year past the midpoint of the meet and up 20 percent when exempting the additional day of racing this year for the inaugural Oak Grove Trotting Derby and Oak Grove Trotting Oaks.

Oak Grove handled $287,760.05 on Tuesday, May 25, 2026 (according the the USTA charts)

Oak Grove's purses that day were $430,000.

some folks on here need to be able to separate some of the variables of harness racing

yes we all know there is shit going on with certain trainers, always has been , and  we all wish the organizations would do more to rid the sport of these folks or at least reign them in

and yes we would all like to see stronger wagering

so there is that angle, no argument

now on the flip side as someone else said many people making tons of money, breeders, owners, trainers and drivers
most businesses are judged on their return on investment  and their ability to turn a profit

the numbers would suggest that from a bottom line perspective harness racing is doing well overall

One or two fed reports that harness racing is over run with crooks, druggers, race fixers, animal abusers and these politicians have been facilitating it'll all be over.

It won't be isolated incidents.

Then they'll be offering to suck a gambler's dickiedoo to stay afloat...glad those bridges are burned down.

I won’t argue with that, but I will also tell you there are far too many Horsemen that don’t race their horses where they belong. Lots of people think they have condition horses when they really have claimers.

Some owners treat their horses like family pets and refuse to put them in a claiming race where they belong for fear of losing it. A trainer once said this about horses, they're not pets. If you want a pet for a horse, buy a pony.

It is different for many trainers and owners. They don't want to lose their horse...because it is hard to replace. Once Engblom, Burke, etc claim the horse it is over. The horse is not the same if you reclaim it. Those are facts like it or not.

It is different for many trainers and owners. They don't want to lose their horse...because it is hard to replace. Once Engblom, Burke, etc claim the horse it is over. The horse is not the same if you reclaim it. Those are facts like it or not.

Some of the little guys will put their horses in a claiming race but for a much higher price than it's worth so it won't get claimed, only problem with that is, the horse has little or no chance of winning or picking up a decent check. If you're worried about losing your horse via the claim box then keep it in condition races where it has a chance.

Batavia Downs, Buffalo Raceway, First Tracks Cumberland, Bally's Dover, Harrah's Hoosier Park, Harrah's Philadelphia, Harrington Raceway, Hawthorne Race Course, Hollywood Casino at The Meadows, Hollywood Slots & Raceway, Monticello Raceway, Northfield Park, Northville Downs at Barry Expo Center, Ocean Downs, Rosecroft Raceway, Running Aces Harness Park, Saratoga Harness, Shenandoah Downs, Tioga Downs, & Vernon Downs are the majority of tracks .
That leaves Yonkers, Meadowlands 4 or 5 days a year, some Ohio tracks, Oak Grove. In Canada Mohawk is only track where you could earn.
That does not create a pretty picture.

Harness racing is only thriving because of handouts. If you take those away everyone would be racing for nothing. This is a charity not an industry at this point. In 1998 the handle for all of horse racing was 628 million and in 2024 it was under 90 million. Harness racing is thriving like refrigerators in trailer parks with ebt cards.

Oops another person wrongly using the term "handouts"
those "handouts " were a negotiated settlement that casinos happily paid to gain  entry to casino through racetracks, it was a sweet deal for them, what they pay to harness racing is a insignificant amount from their earnings

additionally any money that might come from governments is approved and has had some economic impact study behind it, for example the governments feel that the trickle down effect of any money contributed to harness racing is beneficial by allowing farms, blacksmiths, vets, grooms trainers  etc to earn a living and pay taxes, they feel this is better than putting these people out of work and having them collect unemployment

Correct.  Plus the racetracks provide significant business for the casinos. Besides racetrack customers, many track employees often gamble, eat and drink at the casinos. I've seen 30 track employees enter a casino when the races ended!

It’s only surviving because of slots and VLT’S!  Far from thriving!

Look at Monticello. I believe they took the VLT’S out at the track because they were conflicting with their other property.

Look at Tioga-looks like less purse money and cheaper horses too!

Saratoga-greedy horsemen with more dates so you race for less money every week. The track opens too soon February and closes too late-the week before Christmas.

Yonkers-read the posts for yourselves here on plop. Draw your own conclusions!

To me, thriving means more barns are turning a profit than are not.  That is simply not true.  The top 5% of barns are getting rich.  The next 20% are making a nice living and below that they are fighting to stay above water.  That is far from thriving.  And I get this topic is just to get a reaction out of people, but some actually believe this is someone’s actual opinion on the game.  If the casino deals ever disappear, we will see the true state of the game.

Semantics aside, but I don't see the sport thriving at all. Ironic, because some of the premier breeders are, but that is business, tax law, and accounting driven. They'll get theirs one day. As far as any track that is-----even close to-----thriving, if it's true, it is simply the exception. Certainly not the norm.

This is misinformation. Casinos exist because people wanted them. The casino companies used the racing industry to get in the door then the racing industry sold out top them. The casino companies do not racing and will close it down when they get the chance. The "agreement" is just a government created handout which the government can unilaterally end it at any time. Well over 80% of the purses in Pennsylvania are funded by government not customers. Pass decoupling and the casino companies would close racing so fast you would not be able to blink. End the government handouts and the industry would be looking in dumpsters to eat and feed the horses. The industry has turned it back on the customers so I welcome the day the state legislators start turning of the supply of free money.

There are many reasons the sport is thriving. Fact is its thriving.

Thriving sucking on the teat of government. The former governor of Pennsylvania went after the handouts and the Philadelphia newspaper has exposed harness racing several times. Keep your head buried in the sand and you will be the first person crying when the government shuts off the handouts.

Quote
In Pennsylvania, approximately 85% to 90% of harness racing (Standardbred) purses are funded through the state-regulated Pennsylvania Race Horse Development Trust Fund (RHDTF). Traditional wagering on the races themselves (the pari-mutuel handle) only accounts for the remaining 10% to 15% of the purse pools.

Quote
Similar to Pennsylvania and Ontario, the direct pari-mutuel handle (the money actually wagered by bettors) makes up a very small percentage of the harness racing purse pool in Ohio—accounting for roughly 5% to 10% of total purses.

The remaining 90% to 95% of Ohio's harness racing purses is heavily bankrolled by alternative gaming revenues, specifically Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) and commercial casino tax distributions.

Keep sucking on the government's teat. Make sure you save when the money dries up.
I'm making my money the hard way. I'm not some loser relying on the government for a handout.

If you are making money from racing, you are making money from government handouts. Where do you think the purse money is coming from?

Who pays for stakes races?

I believe the owners and breeders do this.

From the money they make from overnight races which is mainly handouts. The whole industry is a house of cards depended on government handouts.

What would happen to the industry if the purses of the overnight races were cut by 85%?

People care about those things. 95% of the people could care less about racing and a sizable number would want racing to be banned even without the handouts.  If we held a referendum asking the people of each state to vote if the racing handout money should go to racing, roads and bridges, schools, or given to the slots players as higher payouts, what would be the results. I am eagerly awaiting your answer. It will show us all how out of touch with reality you are.

I'd rather my money go to the hardworking folks in racing.
Schools already waste most of what I give them.
Slot playing is a losers game for Asians and oxygen tankers.
Road and bridge builders get plenty.  Too many involved are shovel leaners.
Social security and unemployment payments aren't scrutinized well enough to give more.

Very childish comment but what i would have expected. So lets put it all on a referendum. How do you think the vote will go? I notice your were too busy being childish to answer that question.

There is no contract, there is GOVERNMENT. All it takes is a vote and a signature and the handouts are gone. How many races have been held a Pompano this year?

Quote
Major Philadelphia publications, most notably The Philadelphia Inquirer, have taken strong, explicit editorial stances supporting the complete elimination of Pennsylvania’s horse racing subsidies. The state's Race Horse Development Fund—which has directed over $3.5 billion in slot-machine tax revenues to prop up racing purses and breeding incentives since 2004—has been a frequent target of the Inquirer’s editorial board and investigative team. The arguments put forward by Philadelphia media and local policy advocates highlight the primary reasons for ending these payouts:1. The Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Board PositionIn a series of scathing editorials, The Philadelphia Inquirer became one of the first major metro newspapers in the country to call for the horse racing industry to be "put out of its misery" by shutting off the flow of corporate welfare. The Core Argument: The Inquirer argues that the state has created an upside-down set of budget priorities. They point out that hundreds of millions of dollars are funneled annually to a dying, niche sport to pad the pockets of wealthy horse owners (many of whom live out of state), while essential public needs go completely underfunded.  The Shift to Animal Welfare: The paper's stance intensified following an investigative series detailing high horse-mortality rates, doping scandals, and illegal contraband found at Pennsylvania tracks like Parx Racing (located just outside Philly in Bensalem). The editorial board concluded that taxpayers should not be forced to bankroll a sport mired in animal cruelty and regulatory failure.2. Pitting "Horses vs. Students"Philadelphia media heavily covered former Governor Tom Wolf’s recurring legislative push to divert $200 million annually from the horse racing fund to pay for the Nellie Bly Scholarship Program. This program would have provided tuition assistance to 44,000 students attending Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) schools.  Local coverage frequently cited data showing that Pennsylvania was subsidizing racehorses at three times the rate it was investing in actual college students.  Regional education advocates utilized Philly media platforms to highlight that while local students were taking on crushing debt, a single winning horse owner could take home a $56,000 purse on a single race funded entirely by casino tax dollars.3. Diverting Subsidies to Mass Transit (SEPTA)More recently, local discourse in Philadelphia has centered on the state’s massive public transit crisis. With the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) facing massive multi-million-dollar budget deficits, forced service cuts, and fare hikes, local op-eds and policy columns have argued that the $200+ million allocated to horse racing should be redirected to keep trains and buses running.  The prevailing argument in the Philadelphia press is that mass transit serves millions of working-class residents daily, whereas horse racing attendance has plummeted to the point where tracks don't even bother charging admission, making the ongoing subsidy economically unjustifiable.

How the fuck can it take 2 months to clean a 6-Stall barn?

I made my money advising people but I can work with my hands and back.

Day 1 ... I'm done with the barn before lunch and asking ... What's Next?

And how the fuck you show pictures of mowed fields without a single lawn mower in sight?
