Title: Betting pools at Miami Valley
Post by: Mrpick5 on April 26, 2026, 05:00:53 PM
Why are the pools so low? They race for good money. But nobody bets? There was not even $1000 bet on the winner of race 3. Their pick 5 starting in race 2 $583.00 wagered. That’s pathetic.

Standardbred, Racing for Good money has very little to do with pool size!

If you mean purses........ MVG purses are about 25% higher.

And the handle is little higher @ MVG

I watched one race there yesterday. Graphics are hard to decipher and the announcer sounded like he was sleepwalking.

They had some stake races on Thursday. A 14 race card that handled around 375K. The purses were well over 400K.
Planridge Park had 11 races and handled around 170K. The purses were close to 150K.
Only the big cheats make money & some of the drivers. The rest are left with the scraps & are scraping by.

A track like Yonkers does not race on Saturday. That is for most of the year. It is because the racino wants the parking. That has ZERO to do with the patrons. It is the horse trailers that fill their parking lot.

I  agree, from the graphics to the audio it seems like everyone is just going through the motions.

Can't speak for the Dayton/Scioto/Miami Valley circuit but Northfield absolutely cares about their handle and they make an effort... and they do over a million most nights, literally three times as much as the other Ohio tracks.

Northfield has for the most part cared about the handle. Before the VLT’S, there was much more driver, trainer, owner incentives to make some money and you still need pools to succeed in this endeavor.
