I met John Shirreffs. He sat next to me on a flight from FL to NY. Humble, very personable, classy guy. A true gentleman.

After Vietnam he was headed  to Hawaii to become a surfer. He stopped in California and ended up getting a job as a hotwalker.

in the late 90s--he trained a mare named Manistique--a winner of seven Grade 1/Grade 2 races in California

wagering from home was new and I was using YouBet to watch the races on my computer and using a Pennsylvania cell phone to wager on an ADW named Phonebet from my home in New Jersey before 4NJBets was formed

seems like a lifetime ago
