Title: A horse dies on the track where you race... Where does it end up?
Post by: Calhoun on January 27, 2026, 08:57:52 PM
We see it dragged into the trailer and vanned off.  Then what?

Is there always a necropsy?

Disposal... what percentage are:

- Sent to Canada or Mexico?
- Rendered at a regulated facility?
- Cremated?
- Buried?
- Landfill?

What happens where you race?

In Ontario they have to be taken to Guelph University for necropsy, at the owner's expense.

Probably every way you said, but predominantly if government / university will hall away and perform the necropsy, for free and you might find out why they died.

Cremation could cost about $2k.

I asked the Sopranos about body disposal...

Tony - "We buried him. On a hill. Overlooking a little river. With pinecones all around"  ngc3

Christopher - "It's going to be a while before I eat anything from Satriale's"  ngc3

Uncle Junior - "Crying over a chunk of Marble?"  ngc3

Joey Peeps getting his brains blown out - "Couldn't have been much to clean up."  ngc3

Joey Peeps on the headstone - " It's a fucking nickname, his family name is Peparelli."  ngc3

ok, thx.

But, where do the end up?
Furnace, landfill, buried, rendered, etc...?
That's what I'm asking.

Thanks again.

No idea.

Maybe the same place that peoples leftover skin, organs and blood go to after surgeries?

In most jurisdictions. First thing that happens is vet draws 6 vials of blood that get sent for testing. Then the horse is loaded into the ambulance and hauled off the track. Then it is sent to the university contracted to due the necropsy. After that it is picked up by a rendering agency just like any other large animal that passes away at a large animal clinic.
