Title: Maine harness racing is a joke
Post by: Racetime on October 26, 2025, 07:09:29 PM
Is Maine the only state that allows a trainer/driver to continue to drive after having a positive test and putting the horses back under the wife's name ?

I'm unsure of who you're referring to but I've  heard that maine is one of the worse states as far as jealousy and corruption.  I've known Shane Bacon very well from his PA days so in fully imagine it's true.

I live in Maine and can tell you racing here is pretty bad. It's just not a "product" any harness racing fan can be proud of. Cheap horses, small fields, and no real track to showcase any talent. We've heard rumors for years that a "new track" was going to be built somewhere off I95 in southern Maine. I don't think it will ever happen.

I remember back when there was Scarborough Downs. The Horsemen ruined it for themselves.

As much as I would love to see Maine prosper I don’t think with that kind of mentality it will.

I used to head out to "The Downs" often before it closed. Sadly, the racing was bad, food was terrible, and the crowds were very small. Today, there are new high-end apartments, single family homes, and townhouses on that land. A supermarket and some restaurants are slated to move into this very well planned neighborhood.

The only excitement at Scarborough the last few years was when Sweeney would announce the hot dogs etc were all $1 before the last race and the old people would scurry to the run down concession stand…

Lukewarm take: Scarborough Downs was pretty rundown, but it was still a better race day experience than the status quo in southern Maine.

To say Scarborough Downs "was pretty rundown" is a amazing understatement. We would go weekly and sit in the "clubhouse" next to Peter Brandstater and a few other "Regulars". Very nice folks who loved talking horses. Sadly. no money was funneled into the track's upkeep. Dodgeing the potholes in the parking lot were always an adventure. Food could have been better. Bathrooms were in rough shape. And the tote board was rarely completely lit up.

Don't disagree with anything you've written.

With that said: Scarborough in its final state still offered a better race day experience than Cumberland currently offers--especially during the winter meet.
