Title: Howard Oil
Post by: Billsmafia on September 17, 2025, 06:17:58 PM
First, props to Howard for close to 50 years announcing races. I'm not sure how he's been able to sustain a career in race calling that long. It's clear that he's not as sharp now as he was back then (neither am I).

Sometimes saying less is better. For example, the 7th race at MR today--his call word for word in deep stretch: "Greg (Merton), nobody's going to catch you today." Needless to say, somebody did.

Does Howard really think the drivers are listening to him in the stretch--you're home free, put the whip away? He has had an amazing career. I just listened to an audio from about 40 years ago--he was much more enthusiastic and aware of what was happening in each race than he is now. Sad but nobody beats Father Time.

Howard is actually one of the few things I still enjoy about harness racing.

How can Howard get excited calling races nowadays at MR? He looks out his tiny window and there is hardly a soul there? If that wasn’t bad enough he can’t find anything to eat, drink but maybe there is still a bathroom? Anyway Howard should be congratulated for his 50 years at MR. He saw some good years but now a lot of bad ones. If he ever retires I hope the MR management sends him off in a much better fashion than what wasn’t done for John Manzi.

Howard is Howard.......comp ared to some of the jokers at Yonkers - he's pretty good - most days.
Although every once in a while, he does come out with a beauty.......last year he called out the lead horse saying he had "insurmountable lead" - that call was made AT THE HALF.......the horse finished out of the money.

That's got to be some blast from the past if somebody from the old days randomly tunes into Monticello and is like "holy shit that guy is still announcing!"

Personally I always kind of liked him.

Howard Oil is okay. Why keep doing it? I suspect because it is easy. First race on Monday was 12:16 & the last race was 2:20pm. It is an easy part-time job.
