Title: Is it true that Alagna is selling his farm in New Jersey?
Post by: Locked in with pace on May 12, 2025, 05:38:19 AM
If true, I wonder who would buy it? I'm sure it was built baring no expense.  Heard he is moving to Kentucky

The farm is listed for sale. He did purchase a place in KY. I think this is a sign that harness racing at the Meadowlands has a limited future. Kentucky on the other hand has a very strong program and future.

The purses in Kentucky are great, but between the 3 tracks there aren't enough racing dates to accommodate someone with a stable as big as his. Last year he had 170 horses in his stable, so he has to be keeping some of his horses behind in New Jersey at one of the other farms so he can get races for all of them.

Duel eligibility in KY is going to have a huge impact.

In debt up to his eyeballs and major owners pulled the plug and went elsewhere.  Many of his "groups" too there money and found other trainers who don't bill 2x as much.  Couple that with the owners he does have owing him nearly 1/2 a million like Caviar Farms (notorious bad payers) you have cash flow issues.  Feed man is owed and don't get me started on the shippers.  Too much spend spend spend and not enough win win win.

Whether it's indicative of NJ and racing, wanting to be in KY, his business/operation and how he's done over the last few years, or none of that.....I still think it becomes a question of strictly business. In today's day and age, landscape, economics, business, etc......does it make sense to own a farm/training center? Highest and best use. It is one of the business principles that has never gone away and never not applied.

Maybe he's taking some money off the table, downsizing, finding less expensive RE and operating costs.....or the opposite, reducing or getting out of debt, LOL. I ain't asking. LOL.

He is wanting to keep one barn at the training center. Unfortunately for that price and only 135 stalls you would need to build 5 more 40 stall barns to even think about profit

who could blame him?

historical racing machines are adding millions of dollars to the Kentucky purse accounts--meanwhile Gural appears to be tanking his own handle by eliminating his infamous drag and cutting of Elite in the WPS pools so he can cry poor  mouse and ask the state of NJ for a bigger handout.

Considering the amount of money his owners have invested in horses and to run such a large operation, to only win 5 million in purses means alot of people are losing money. When Ron Burke was interviewed by Heather Wilder earlier this year she asked him how much it costs to run his operation. He said 1 million dollars per month, but their purse earnings were 20 million.

Hey the guy is a top trainer. Excellent horseman. But he's had a run of no so good years. His not so good years would be career years for 98% of the industry, LOL.

Only problem is, most of those 98% don't have anywhere near the amount of money invested as he does. Even Ake's stable has good earnings too, but they have alot of high priced yearlings not earning their keep.

Burke should buy it he's big at Pocono and Meadowlands...

It's cheaper to keep them at some of the training centers in New Jersey.

Tony is a good guy but he's learning a lesson just about every trainer eventually discovers: you cannot keep heading down to the yearling sales and purchase 3-5 Million dollars worth of stock. This isn't the Tbreds. May be easy for Myron Bell to spew out those clinches about "not just buying a filly, you're buying a broadmare"---he's always been a shell for George and helping George get stupid money for the yearlings he puts up for auction. And to purchase land and build something like that for scratch is akin to the guy who tries the golf course thing. 90% of the time they are never around when the first Tee shot is delivered five years later. Here's hoping it works out for him and he can reboot in a more modest, Casie Coleman fashion.

sorry grandstand
have to disagree
if someone is a "top trainer" they dont have a run like his last 3 years
no one gets more top quality yearlings than he has the last 3-5 years with limited success
but he owns very little of them overall, spent his money on that training center and changing course very quickly now

Nifty Norman in the most recent HRU "What does the future hold for you?

“As the beginning of this conversation foretold, I am not
particularly bullish on racing here in the Northeast. I am now
of an age where I’d be reluctant to pick up and leave. However,
circumstances might force me to do what I’d rather not do. I
have been doing some scouting mostly in Kentucky. I wish I were
the only one, but sadly I am not alone. If we have a future, that
is probably where it lies."

That's OK. I agree with your points. I am not just looking at the #'s. I know him as a trainer, horseman, etc. While Tony simply hasn't produced based upon the budget he had/spent, and his owners simply didn't do well, that to me doesn't label him as not a top trainer. I am simply saying he's a very good horsemen and a top trainer independent of his results. Like you said, he's had a tough 3 year run. The numbers would be exceptional.....i f he didn't spend and start with what he did. LOL.

This is what happens when you flat out lie to owners and get caught.
