Title: Whipping a horse makes them go slower
Post by: Yonkers1A on May 11, 2025, 09:40:17 AM
In an article in today's HRU it says just that

" The study, published in the research journal Frontiers in Animal
Science, found that not only doesn’t going to the whip cause a
horse to increase speed at a key moment in the race, it in fact
more often than not leads to deceleration of the horse.

If you remember Vern Crank from Brandywine Raceway, he had a top pacer named Town Drunk. He was a very lazy horse but when Crank used to whip him, and he did it alot, it's like it woke up the horse and it responded very well.

I've heard stories like the above many times with the names changed. Matts Scooter is the most used and abused in his version of the old wives tales. I come from the era when whip was king and I pounded away like my peers. It was stupid then and stupid now. It just another bad myth from a business that has always resisted change.
When the urging rules were changed in Ontario horses went faster and still the old soaks weren't convinced. Sad.

I knew some drivers who used to whip the side of the shaft instead of the horse, don't see it much anymore.

Depends on the horse. I had a horse the driver pulled first over and whipped his stifle and the horse just stopped! Many go forward when whipped.

Walter didn't need a whip to get them to go, kicking is the best.

Just pull out the earplugs and start yelling.
Ron Pierce did that on my friend’s horse after the finish line at the Meadowlands.    73cv.2

From a well-respected horseman—the reason they don’t want drivers “kicking” a horse is because they might actually fall out of the bike and hurt themselves and others!
