Hunter Myers still unconscious. Very upsetting.

My heart stopped. Haven't seen one that nasty in a long long time. Thoughts and prayers to Hunter! And of course everyone else

No Aaron or Hunter then. Thanks Bello

Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt. But it's the reality of the sport. Yes I snagged this before they take it down. What blows me away is this wasn't declared a no contest. I mean come on.

Just wow! Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved
-
omg...dIDNT REALIZE IT WAS THAT BAD WHEN i WATCHED IT LIVE. I thought Palone got to the infield when he broke. A touch too late makes all the difference.
All the best and prayers to the drivers.

That's why I did the zoom on what happened behind. Much worse in the back.
-
That was brutal to watch, looks like Hunter fell face and chest first to the track at full speed. Really hope he escapes any serious injury.
-
Yeah that was brutal to watch. I’m praying for Hunter seem to get the worst of it. 🙏
-
Unfortunately, Hunter didn’t recover. RIP
-
Unfortunately I believe hunter passed away from his injuries according to a Facebook post.
-
Oh No...I hope for once not to believe these poses.
-
Horrible News.

Sadly it looks to be true :(

RIP Hunter. He was a good kid with a bright future
-
Im shaking here. Hunter was one of the good guys. Mid 20's. This is a tough game. RIP Hunter
-
Horrible tragedy
-
Was a great kid, with God given ability, leaves behind a 1 year old child. Drove for me at meadows and nfd. Rest in peace!
-
RIP Hunter you were a good young man.
-
Someone posted he’s in very critical condition, so I don’t know what to believe.
If true, then at least there is hope.

As much as I wish that were true it is unfortunately not the case. Hunter has passed away. I am sick to my stomach.

On FB-
“Chloe’s dad is asking that people quit sharing that Hunter Myers has passed!!! Please respect their family. Hunter is in very critical condition with a brain injury but is very much still alive but on life support. I am standing at the hospital and this is 100% facts. Please pray for this family they need a miracle 💚💚 The family will update everyone with facts when they are ready.”
-
Could someone tell me what happened?
Who else was involved?
How are the horses?
I’m sorry don’t mean to stir things up

Unfortunately it appears the worst has happened. R.I.P kid

DRF reported the other 4 drivers were ok just really sore bumps and bruises.. although they also prematurely reported Hunter's passing which is extremely negligent.
All horses are ok. Merriman, Brady brown, Jeremy Indof and Case Bateson were the other drivers involved. Dave Palone's horse was in the lead on the backside and broke and it was a chain reaction.. nasty nasty accident
-
Looked like Merriman went flying. Brady Brown avoided it.
-
Very sad. Didn’t know him but sad. All I’d like to say is if these drivers would move there hand holds up to normal position so they can steer away from danger. He couldn’t move the handholds were in his and others backs And who invented this stupid ness of post parading holding the buckles and hand hold are behind them. This tragedy could’ve been avoided.
-
Move the handholds up, and sit up. Ya can't see and it's tough to keep on upright without scraping your helmet on the track. It happens so fast, ya can't reach up and grab the buckle.

Fuck you. In that situation it wouldn’t have mattered

Well, it couldn’t have been much worse. Give it a chance, time for the judges to enforce the leaning back rule.

There is no leaning back rule. Oh and im guessing you have never sat in a newer race bike they are designed that way for lift and aerodynamics

watching the video -- the handholds were in Palone's lap when the horse took a bad step --- you will see after about the third step, the handholds were up by his chin.....
Would it make a difference ?? I am not experienced enough to know if it would.... but it's been talked about for decades since the cheetah was in use and everyone laying back.... Often talked about nothing done..... Often mentioned it would take a death to get the handholds mandatorily moved up....
There was a photo from Hunter's girlfriend posted on facebook, her holding his hand, and praising him as a father.... that took courage.... may she stay strong.

Palone has been driving like that for 20+ years
-
Palone has been driving like that for 20+ years
true true -- and many others, handholds in the lap --- remarkably ( For Palone's sake ) with no help, this horse was able to stay on his feet or the Palone would've benn ran over by a train of horses.
-
do you think anyone involved will be a lil gun shy to get back behind the gate? are these guys going to have ptsd? this is a dangerous game. 1000 lb animals going fast. there is very little protection for drivers.
-
Do they need better helmets?
-

I was thinking the same thing. I was surprised that some tracks ran that night and next day as well. Thinking maybe they should have just cancelled all harness racing the following day. I''d imagine it had to be hard for all drivers to race that night and next day.
It is a dangerous sport. Seen many drivers tossed from the bike and ran over by horses. There was the one at Yonkers a year or so back where 3 or 4 drivers were seriously hurt. One of them was in the hospital for a long time and still to this day recovering from it.
-
Do they need better helmets?
I believe they did improve the helmets. Unfortunately being launched from the bike in the manner he was, not sure if any helmet could have protected him. I was thinking more like seat belts? Maybe these guys need to be strapped in better. Seeing too many guys being launched from the bike in accidents.
-
yes helmets are great. and they can prevent a serious injury. with that being said it only protects very little of the body. even vest. yes they will help some but still the drivers are super vulnerable in a wreck.
i wonder if any changes will be made. im not sure what changes could be made. driver are just in dangerous position anytime they take the track.
if i were one of the drivers involved id seriously have to reconsider going out there again. the money is great for the top guys. but it isnt everything.
-
Strap them in, seat belts. NO THANKS!! More dangerous!!! The only time i've seen that was when the bungeed Case's foot in the stirrup so he couldn't kick. How many drivers have broken their seats so the can lay back farther? I actually remember when you had to have your bike inspected and they put a sticker on it at the Meadowlands.
-
If you were around when they had the single shaft sulky, the drivers sat so far back they were almost flat on their back during the race.

Look how far back the driver is compared to the the old bikes. It also allows the horse on top an extra. 2 x3 ft.. all in the desire to make the horses go faster and faster. Speed sells stud fees. Another USTA (breeder run outfit) not looking at safety factors.

I totally agree. I don't know what changes can be made. Possibly making drivers sit up and stop this laying back in the bike? I do believe this will change some things among drivers. Less games being played on the track. I don't know how some of them can go back behind a horse after this. Won't be easy for some

100% !!! Everything is about speed and $$. I just can't see how lying back so far so where you're almost flat can be safe. It needs to be addressed. These guys can't possibly see in front of them to be able to react fast enough.
They really need to clean up the sport by getting rid of the dopers. A small fine and suspension isn't enough. If they get caught once ..okay but when it's multiple times....they should be BANNED PERMANENTLY !! And none of this changing trainer name to a driver or some stupid shit. They need to do better at following these dopers and stop the games!
-
Owners and breeders, who run the sport--stare at the clock more than bettors do
they are enamored by a final quarter go sub 26 and they absolutely love $5k claimers going 48 at The Red Mile
that is part of the reason they don't want to rid the industry of the doping-because without the drugs they wouldn't go as nearly as fast
-
I drove a Single Shaft, you didn't have to lie straight back like they do now.
-
You didn't have to, but some drivers were so far back I don't know how they could see.
-
They can't

Seriously for once. I want your opinions here. This mare Dandy's Starlette was entered 11 times this year. Scratched four, ran the last 16th lame in between two scratches, two of them qualifiers and then what we all saw happen. When you watch previous starts you'll notice something on her head that she wasn't wearing the other day. And when you key in on her in all her replays you begin to see a pattern. Obviously something going on with her. She's right back in this Wednesday too. But watching the replay she "leaped" over something that wasn't there.

I agree this horse has something wrong with it, but it didn’t start this accident. Palone’s horse did.
-

100% true. a true seatbelt is not a solution.
Could they possibly come up with a strap to slow you down when thrown from the bike
something with a small strip of Velcro that would break free, but minimize how far and hard you got thrown?
I think it's worth discussing and seeing if there's somwthing that can be done
-
A driver needs to be able to move his body around some during the race if only to pop the earplugs so strapping him in wouldn't work. Accidents happen in horse racing and with motor vehicles, and cars are equipped with all kinds of safety equipment but sometimes even that's not enough to prevent a fatality.

If you've ever sat in one of today's bikes it is what it is. Gravity keeps your ass in the seat and forward pressure you feet on the pegs. All a seat belt would do is bring the bike with you. The catapulting really can't be stopped either. I'd start with the handholds gotta go up and there has to be a limit to the leaning.

My trainer had 1 of the ones that fell in the race. He said Palone’s horse jumped a shadow.

Hand holds are the most useless piece of equipment in harness racing today.
A great young man gone and nothing will change.

That was easy to see. Unfortunately when the horse jumped and went on a break Palone couldn’t get it too the inside fast enough. Driving horses is a dangerous occupation so please remember that when yall get crying about drivers making too much money. I’ve known Hunter since he was first really getting going great kid. Still sickens me that I’ll never see him again. But all this knee jerk reaction of wanting to all the sudden change the rules is ridiculous. And for the comment about drivers being scared to go back out there. They need a different profession if so. You can’t drive scared or you will cause more accidents. It was a very unfortunate accident and sadly they happen. I don’t stop driving my car every day when someone dies in an accident,do you??
