Title: Record Handle at Harrah's Philly
Post by: Scooteroo on December 24, 2024, 04:13:28 PM
Harrah's Philly is one of only 2 tracks running today, Tampa Bay Downs is the other. Harrah's Philly is on pace to handle well over 1.5 million, which would break their previous all-time handle. On a normal day they'd handle between $400,000 & $500,000.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Good for them.
Merry Xmas Chesterites

I thought they'd do well today but not this good.

They should give money to all the grooms, trainers who were there, and drivers who raced on this special day.

It definitely helped their races were on FanDuel/TVG today which they never are. In fact the 14th and final race alone handled over $200,000.

Did that handle cover the purses for the day?

Adding up Chester looks like an amazing 1.7 million. That’s insane

Purses were $145,000 today. If their host fees average 4.5%, that comes to $76,500, but their purses are mostly funded from their casino and sportsbook, without them, the track would have been out of business years ago.

Chester, PA — Harrah’s Philadelphia has a little bit extra to celebrate during this holiday season, as during its Christmas Eve noon program, the track handled $1,587,638 — the biggest betting total ever at the southeast Pennsylvania oval.

They did close to $250k on last race when it was only race in the tote going in the world. Too bad they were not smart enough to drag the races like usual and have 3-4 in the unique spot

proof that the sport would be self sufficient if there was only 1 track

proves that the public is stupid and doesnt care that pennsylvania takeout rates are the worst in harness racing...how anyone bets races from that state is beyond me

Their takeout rates on trifectas and superfectas are between 25 & 30%, which is outrageous, plus there's a $1 minimum on tri's and 50 cents on superfectas which makes them difficult to play. The Pick 4 has a 15% takeout which isn't bad and 18% on the Pick 5, but those pools normally aren't very big.

Shows how stupid tracks are for not racing on Christmas day

It’s actually a good decision as the handle doesn’t compensate for OT pay

In my opinion there's a big difference between racing on Christmas Eve like Chester did and Christmas Day. Asking people to work and race on Christmas is a big sacrifice most people aren't willing to make.

The old Meadowlands use to open today. It was like x-mas to harness players. A good card with a big handle. They should raced today instead of earlier in the month. A decent card would have led to double or more handle...then the crappy Thursday cards they had. More tracks are closed too & that means more horses available.
