As an Illinois horseman originally this is now 6 tracks I have raced at that will have closed. Such a shame. People will say what they say but Freehold was fun to race at and little guys had a chance to compete. Times change. I feel bad for so many of the people who truly make their living out of there. Chester and Pocono are far too tough for "little guys". I don't miss much about NJ, but racing there is certainly one of them. My wife loved watching our horses there, may she RIP. Condolences to all those directly affected. It's like an old friend passing.

Their strategy of lifetime banning anyone  from the grounds for placing bets on games they deemed "advantage" games was not great management

You are not very bright

the democratic governor was trying to save it by providing $1.6 mil for purse subsidies(welfare)

if Pennwood is keeping the land and not selling-then they are simply not applying for racing dates-which saves NJ the $1.6 mil--and Gural is eyeballing that money

You did state the NJ must sanction, or approve, this closure. By all accounts, that was incorrect. Freehold was able to fold without any approval from the state. I believe that is what the previous post was referencing

the state was allocating $1.6 mil for them

i am confident they had a say-whether it yay or nay

also i said they had to sanction this as long as they were providing subsidies

they are not doing that anymore

Obviously. If the 2025 appropriation was official for 2025 and freehold received the money in 2025, they would have ro race. That was never the case, we are not yet in 2025. Freehold is under no obligation by the state to stay open past 2024. The state can't say we are going to force you to stay open in 2025 and take a subsidy

Sounds like a few people will need to find new accommodations. It’s crazy to think these places will never be known in 50 years like you guys out East saying your fair tracks are now malls and housing developments. Do you think the people living or shopping there have any idea they use to race horses there 40 years ago ?

Was there the day Niatross raced, traffic backed up for miles on Rt 9 trying to get there....somewher e Harold Kelly, Jackie Ingrassia, and Tom Devitis are shedding a tear.  Surprised this didn't happen a long time ago.

I'm not a big gambler or Sportsbook patron, but didn't they have a sportsbook at Freehold?
Isn't that usually a moneymaker?

Parties definitely over . We made contact with Howard Bruno who says he’s the General Manager and in charge of the wrapping up of the facilities. They are going to finish out there remaining 28 race dates . He also said nothing will be sold before year end . They have an auction house currently taking inventory of all owned assets that will then be put up in a public auction including all track and farm equipment. He said there is very little memorabilia left . He said there are some nice paintings. There are ovens and kitchen appliances/ restaurant equipment as well. He assumed it will take place in January or February 2025 .

I called the SBOANJ today because I heard that a complaint was filed. It's done. Gibbons is representing the SBOANJ. None of the defendants have notified anyone as to counsel yet. We'll see who the defendants use and what they say. The SBOANJ is asking for money owed to them. This should be interesting. The complaint will be on the system tomorrow.

Bottom line it can stay shuttered and just pay the taxes on the property. They can’t force them to race especially refusing the charity money . Done is done. Who gives a shit honestly. The place handled 294,000 last Saturday that’s zero interest.
